Why sit on a hot, smelly, noisy street? Most libraries have Internet access, from which you can post a "please help me" listing on eBay. Here’s a good one for our OP: <http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5603543548 "Help me start up my business! needing funds to start up my business adventure, so i can get more books, and other items people are looking for." Maybe you misunderstood the seminar, I think they mean dropshipping. In dropshipping, you sell the product and someone else ships the item. You don’t physically possess the item on site. So, you’re like a sales rep on Ebay. The other option is you sell info only. You write up an auction that offers valuable info, and when the buyer pays….you simply send them the link to somneone else’s website. Sounds right?

One way is dropshipping. Basically, you sell goods that your supplier owns, send orders to the supplier, and he ships things. There’s not much profit and many potential headaches in dropshipping. Search Google Groups for the word "dropshipper" and you’ll see what I mean. Another way is to sell other people’s stuff on consignment. Your neighbor has an item but doesn’t want to photograph it, describe it, research its market value, design a listing, etc. You do that work and take a percentage of sales. Great way to ruin a friendship. Best way is to go get your own stuff to sell. Start in your closets.

Career Advice: Should I be an accountant?
Question:
Sheesh, I didn’t realize new hires were getting offers that low. I made more than that without even *using* my degree (I was waaaay overqualified for some of the jobs I had after I got out of school). The really sad thing about this is – I live in the MidWest, where wages are supposedly lower because the cost of living is so much lower. Yet the local McDonalds in the little town we live in pays $6.00/hr, which is more than your’s does. In the nearest city, they are paying more like $8.00/hr, and are lucky to get high school kids for that. Average wages are more like $10.00 hr. for unskilled labor.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Susan, I think you’ve missed the point about the McDonalds comment. Many, many new hires at CPA firms are not paid that much these days. Local firms often start a student in the low 20s. Now, for a 40 hour a week job, a low 20s salary is pretty good in most places with an average cost of living. But during tax season, it’s a whole different story. Let’s take a new hire accountant named John as our example. John graduates from college, and in November or so gets hired on at a local accounting firm for 22,000 a year. For someone like John, the promise of going to school for accounting was so that he would not have to be flipping burgers while making near minimum wage at a place like McDonalds. So in November, John is quite thrilled to be making 22,000 a year. It seems a lot to John because it’s about $ 425.00 a week. To him that’s around $ 10 or $ 11 dollars an hour. Pretty nice compared to the low wages John made while in high school or college at various low-paying menial jobs such as flipping burgers at McDonalds. With me so far ? OK, now let’s move ahead to tax season. Now we find that John is no longer working 40 hour work weeks. As a new hire, his employers at the firm have him working 80 hours a week and sometimes more than that. But since John’s firm ( like MOST accounting firms ) is not paying him any overtime, John is still making around $ 425.00 a week. $ 425.00 per week divided by 80 hours = $ 5.31 an hour. Yikes ! The national minimum wage is $ 5.15 cents an hour. But here is John. During tax season, he’s making only 16 cents above the minimum wage ! Around here, McDonalds new hires start for around $ 5.75 to $ 6.00 an hour. And teenage babysitters often earn more per hour than John is making during his 80 hour weeks during tax season. The McDonalds example is a good one, Susan. It’s much more accurate than people think. And the biggest reason it’s accurate is that we live in a country that allows accounting firms to get out of paying overtime to new hires. It’s shameful. But it does have some good benefits I guess. The BMW dealers can sell more cars to partners of accounting firms. I was offered at one firm a low 20s salary,

Even these wages in the low to mid 20s wouldn’t be so bad if the job was a 40 hour job. But with tax season hours at accounting firms, and no overtime, these new hires end up making horrible wages while the partners laugh all the way to the bank. I would love to see one of the network news programs like 20/20 or 60 Minutes do a story on how accounting firms use this overtime " loophole " to shortchange and take advantage of new hires during tax season. They could even profile two " Johns " for the story. One who would work at McDonald’s and one at an accounting firm. The story could follow them both through tax season, and see who ended up making more per hour. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sheesh, I didn’t realize new hires were getting offers that low. Susan, it is pretty sad to say the least. And on top of the low wages entry level accountants get, there are also costs associated with that first entry level accounting job that a worker at McDonald’s won’t have. John, the fictional accountant in my example, may also have to fork over money for parking every day if the firm is in a downtown area. On top of that, working in an accounting firm is a white-collar job. Maintaining a white-collar wardrobe (costs of clothes, dry-cleaning, etc), is another cost John will incur with the accounting firm job that he wouldn’t have at McDonalds. So that $ 5.31 an hour that John makes during tax season may be worth even less when additional costs that " go with the job " are taken into account. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sheesh, I didn’t realize new hires were getting offers that low. I was in the restaurant biz, and we would often hold special parties for different types of orgs — believe me they are different. Directly on point: A recruiting dinner party hosted by a large law firm.,., and a recruiting dinner party hosted by a big six accy firm. — The lawyers drank like fish, the highest liquor sales per customer of any group ever !!!, the accountants barely drank, ordering slightly more liquor than a church study group. –I am amazed that someone who has admittedly never worked in the profession has –such insight into the types of people who are accountants and the stereotypes –that surround them. — –I was in sales, and then accounting. I would say that the types of people who –worked in both were alot more similar than different. Sales people are a bit –more outgoing, but the college grads I met that were into accounting liked to –go out and drink, and go to social occassions

People who are pure accountants are some of the most boring, anal-retentive, and humorless type people you’ll ever meet in any job. Will you happy working around those type of people ? And do you like sitting at a desk and working in a stuffy cubicle for 10-14 hours a day ?
I am amazed that someone who has admittedly never worked in the profession has such insight into the types of people who are accountants and the stereotypes that surround them. I was in sales, and then accounting. I would say that the types of people who worked in both were alot more similar than different. Sales people are a bit more outgoing, but the college grads I met that were into accounting liked to go out and drink, and go to social occassions just like the rest of the free world. When we were on the road, we always made a point of catching a baseball game or hitting the casino during our trips. And the 10-14 hour days are mostly times that run up to deadlines. More often than not, my work weeks were 40 hours. The one thing that is bad about Big 4 accounting is the travel, but the good thing is the flexibility. You don’t have some boss hovering over you making sure you are in your seat until 5 PM if you need to go run a personal errand. The hierarchy is prettly losely woven. If you are a staff person, it is usually up to your senior on the job to let you go if you have some personal errands to run.

Joe, are you interested in business ? Getting an accounting degree doesn’t mean you have to go out and be an accountant. I still believe that an accounting degree is by far the best overall business degree that you can get. Not everyone who majors in accounting becomes an accountant. I know of one guy who bought a unit of a gas station/convenience store from a franchise and using his accounting skills to help him do all the bookeeping for the place. He worked in public accounting and didn’t like it. There are also questions you need to ask yourself about the kind of environment you like working in. People who are pure accountants are some of the most boring, anal-retentive, and humorless type people you’ll ever meet in any job. Will you happy working around those type of people ? And do you like sitting at a desk and working in a stuffy cubicle for 10-14 hours a day ? many pure accounting jobs are like that. On the other hand, have you ever thought about running your own business ? In my opinion, an accounting degree is very valuable for someone who wants to run their own business. Decide on what YOU want to do. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well Joe, I suggest you don’t choose accounting as your "job". I wouldn’t like to see the standard lowered by your entry! The majority of the people that have responded on the working conditions in public practice have experiences complete different from mine. I started at the firm I work at in October 2002 and have had nothing but good things to say so far. I would like tax season to be over, obviously, so I can have Saturdays back, but other than that… Since the first of February I’ve been working around 50-55 hours a week. My base salary is in the mid 20s but I am also getting paid time and half for overtime. Plus I get some decent benefits – health insurance, accrued vacation days, flexible hours. All in all, with the OT from tax season, I’ll end up making around 34-36K this year without my CPA (which, hopefully, I’ll have in November), and the partners seem to be preparing me for a long-term commitment to the firm. I think that’s pretty decent, overall, for an entry level job. Perhaps it’s just working for a small firm in a small town. Any others here work in a similar situation? Is mine really that much of a rarity? – Michael S. Whitehead.

Joe, the first question you want to ask yourself is if you’re interested in or think you would like doing accounting work. Is accounting something you have an interest in ? You have to find out first whether you’re interested in accounting before thinking about a career in it. Very few jobs that pay well are " easy, " if I’m understanding what you mean by that term. Find out what you want to do. Pick a career that you enjoy but one that will also put a roof over your head. accounting takes a good amount of education. But when you are done with college or with the CPA or CMA exams, your learning is not done. You have to continue learning as laws and rules concerning accounting issues change. Don’t pick a career whether it’s " easy " or not. If you don’t like something, it won’t matter if it’s easy because it will be " hard " to continue to do it day after day. Accountants can work a LOT of hours. If you don’t like accounting, those hours will be very hard for you to do. And whoever said accounting was " easy " ? A good rule for you to follow is that things that are " easy " are usually not going to be the things that pay well. If something is " easy, " then lots of people can do it. So the pay won’t be so good.

Louis, I can’t imagine anyone keeping an expensive boat sitting in a repair facility for 9 yrs. If he had a legitimate claim, my guess is Whaler would have corrected it, or he would have won in court. — Jim "People who disagree with ME aren’t just wrong, they’re evil…"

Even if the boat required $10,000 repairs, I would think that most people would have the work done – then gone after Whaler. I have a 1999 commercial whaler – these boats are made for the military, coast guard etc – are not made to be tough not pretty -and are warranted for structural (not cosmetic) flaws. My boat was shipped with some cosmetic flaws -the boats cleats and rails needed to be re-powdercoated -the underside of the gunnels where rough – they needed to be taken off and gelled (this is no easy task) -my leaning post was shipped with no gel on the inside Whaler was contacted – they responded to the dealer – who was told to fix the boat to my satisfaction – period. The dealer had the boat for 2 weeks – everything fixed beyond my expectations. All the cosmetic NON-WARRANTY items I had issues with where fixed at Whalers expense. I’d certainly hope Whaler is still repairing boats that are under the long hull warranty. To refuse to repair a hull, with the warranty still effective, would put them in breach of contract under Magnusson-Moss in several areas where the lawyers could make complete replacement costs of a boat look like a pittance, compared to what the payout would be after the court battle…..if you get my drift. I’m going to be watching this very closely because my Sea Ray and your Whaler are part of the same Brunswick conglomerate corporation. Bayliner owners should also keep an eye on this. Larry

Rich, My guess is that the web site is a way to "encourage" Boston Whaler to fix whatever the problem is "under Warrenty". I can’t belive that the boat sat at BW for 8 or 9 yrs waiting to be fixed. Michael, Quality is definitely measurable, but I agree that perception of quality or lack there of will impact on the way someone views the product. — Jim "People who disagree with ME aren’t just wrong, they’re evil…" – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Quality, or the lack of, in today’s market has become more a subjective perception than a measurable commodity. The automobiles of this era are a good example. No one can deny that there has been dramatic increase in the quality of today’s cars, more so than ever before, and yet most of us older folks still refer to some brands, across the board, as dogs. We remember our old 1962 Dodge (Chevy, Ford) car or truck and, so be it, all Dodge (Chevy, Ford) cars or trucks are dogs forever more. Unless, of course, you look subjectively, and boats are no exception. Boats too, all of them, all brands, are much more reliable than they used to be. lhfarm1 has an interesting auction history, mostly computer peripherals and software, cdr’s etc. For shit’s and grinns I emailed him asking if Whaler gave him a qoute to correct the hull. This happened to a couple of Scituate men around fifteen years ago on their shakedown run on a new Whaler 21 0r 23. They were steaming along in Cape Cod bay when one of the men noticed water coming through the deck sole. Moments later the hull split in half down the centerline. It was early spring in 42 degree water, one survived to tell his tale to the Boston Globe. I wouldn’t go near this one. My guess is that the web site is a way to "encourage" Boston Whaler to fix whatever the problem is "under Warrenty". I can’t belive that the boat sat at BW for 8 or 9 yrs waiting to be fixed.
Jim, I don’t think so. It’s an ebay ad. Putting it out there is a commitment to sell it in a short amount of time, so I don’t think this is about leverage against the manufacturer. Rich Stern
Response:
Rich, Many of ebay ads have "reserve" prices, which really doesn’t make it a bid, just a place to sell a product. I assumed that this item had a reserve price, it does not. This could be one hell of a great deal, or one hell of a expensive nightmare. I saved the site to see what it finally sells for. — Jim "People who disagree with ME aren’t just wrong, they’re evil…"

Very interesting story on the boat. I wouldn’t touch it for any price. It has reportedly been in outside storage for ~9 years with an inner/outer hull delamination. Do you think it might be repairable within the normal selling price of the boat? I wonder what the storage charges are for ~9 years of storage? Do you think Whaler provides free storage? Based on Whaler’s excellent reputation for dealing with people, I’ll speculate that the owner put a lawyer into the picture. Once the laywers get involved the stew is usually ruined. Let’s see… my client lost the use of the boat for X seasons so you owe us a new boat plus $4 million. Gotta earn my fee, you know. ;=) Butch – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – peripherals and software, cdr’s etc. For shit’s and grinns I emailed him asking if Whaler gave him a qoute to correct the hull. Quality, or the lack of, in today’s market has become more a subjective perception than a measurable commodity. The problem is with our self-maintained perceptions, the brand decals that are afixed to the back of our minds rather than our rear windows, perceptions that can be fueled by the increasingly rare and uncommon problem referenced below in the Whaler comment. An "Accounting Technician" ??
Question:
Hi Everyone, A couple of weeks ago, I asked a question about which accounting software was most preferred by accountants. The concensus was that the client chooses–Quickbooks most likely–and the accountant lives with it. You all answered several questions I had (some I didn’t realize I had) and in the final analysis made me realize that I’d rather work for the accountants than the clients. As a bookkeeper, I always thought that door was closed to me….that anyone working directly for an accountant is an "accountant in training". However, now I’ve come across a school here in Toronto that offers a course called "Accounting Technician". It includes two computer progams (I think one is "Caseware"). I don’t know much more about it. . I want to go into something new but related to my bookkeeping experience and this seems to be a viable direction, but ??? I’d really appreciate your views. Thanks. Judy
Response:
It sounds as though you have some prior bookkeeping experience. May accounting firms not only prepare taxes but also do accounting work for clients as outsourced services. These can include A/P, P/R, G/L, etc. If you have experience in these areas no new training may be needed for you to assume a position with a local accounting and/or bookkeeping service. Of course I’m always the first to encourage additional training/education so don’t let that stop you from pursing the additional education. I mention that only because you may already be ready for one of these positions and then you may get some educational assistance from your new employer both financially and guidance. Truly good firms will help you by helping you set goals and then in meeting them, but of course the real work is up to you. Hi Jude! As Donald mentioned, depending on your experience as a bookkeeper, you may have a good foundation for moving into the "Accounting Technician" area of Public Practise. One CA firm I used to work for had "Technicians" that had been employed for 15-20 years in the same capacity. They were valued for there practical knowledge, and ability to clean up "messes" brought in by clients in a quick and efficient manner. Many firms provide payroll, and general and general monthly/quarterly/annual bookkeeping services to their clients in addition to year-end and tax work. That is where the career technicians (the non-accountants in training types) come in and really shine. One word of warning though… The salary scale for technicians may not be as prosperous as it is for the self-employed person. Regards, David Spence

Hi Don…..Hi David You’ve both given me some food for thought. I’ve been told by the school here that, with my extensive bookkeeping experience, I could expect to earn about $25/hr as a "Technician". Although you don’t indicate which country you’re in, do you know if that’s BS?? Thanks Judy

Gore-tex bivy bags

Thomas, I have the OR Bivy (two poles) and have used it in heavy rain storms day after day——I always stayed dry and comfortable, even when water puddled on the surface. Response:
The waterproofness of Gore-Tex bivvies depends on the bivy. My brother’s REI model got him quite wet recently in a light but sustained rain, and then again in a short, moderate rain. Sad to say, but I think that the waterproofness of just about anything falls under the "it depends" category: the brand, model, and exact design of the item under consideration, it’s age, whether the person making it had a hangover that day, whether it was made from a "good" batch of Gore-Tex, whether the seam-sealing machine had been serviced recently, whether you got yours before or after the cost-slashing accountants got to the design and mandated changes ("improvements"), phases of the moon, etc. John

"Waterproofness" also depends on the understanding of the user. I’ve found that many times the user’s diagnosis of a leak turned out to be false, and that the true source of the the water was condensation. In my experience people usually underestimate the waterproofness of breathable fabrics and overestimate the breathability. YMMV, of course. — Remove "spamnot" to email me. Take a lightweight tarp also and you should be fine. Some netting on the bivy is necessary, the bugs might chew you up. Griz

Response:
The enemy (Mr. Moisture) is from within. There is no question that Goretex is waterproof. However, it or any other fabric like it, cannot vent out the pint+ of moisture that comes out of the pores of the average human while they sleep. As days go by, sleeping bags tend to become damp to wet. This is especially true when the evaporation rate is slow (i.e., when the humidity is high or it is raining). Vententilation at both ends is necessary for long term moisture management. Not to put down bivy sacks and bivy tents — They are light weight, easy to set up and add substantial warmth. I use a bivy tent for solo backpacking on trips where reducing weight is a prority. Best used with a synthetic bag. Commodity Futures – Accounting and Tax Entries
Question:
If you have some background in recording purchases and sales (including short sales) of commodity futures for accounting and tax purposes, I would appreciate reading how you record them. A person usually deals with a broker and puts up a margin deposit for the purchase or short sale. The deposit for the futures contract is small when compared to the price of the actual contract. Suppose you deposit $5,000 with your broker for a $20,000 futures contract and you later sell the contract for $30,000. Ignoring commissions, your broker would give you back $15,000 – your $5,000 deposit plus your $10,000 profit. There are two basic ways you could record this: 1. You record your purchase as $5,000, your sales revenue as $15,000 and your gross profit as $10,000; or 2. You record the $5,000 deposit as a receivable from your broker, and the $20,000 as contract inventory and a payable to your broker. When you make the sale, you would crdit sales for $30,000, debit $20,000 to the payable owing your broker, and debit $10,000 to the receivable owing from your broker. You would also make another entry transferring $20,000 from your inventory to contract purchase costs. At this point, you would have a $15,000 receivable owing from your broker, contract sales of $30,000, a purchase cost of $20,000, and a gross profit of $10,000. The first way is easier. What are your views? — Cheers, LLOYD LINDSAY – Chartered Accountant
Response:
SFAS#80 addresses the accounting for futures contracts. There is a good example of such in Appendix B beginning Paragraph 17 of the Statement which also includes interim reporting, recognition of gains and losses, etc.
