Reference for TX Partnership/S-Corp

Question:

Can anyone recommend some good books, links, and resources as references for business accounting in Texas? I know that consulting a CPA is best, but I’d like to be able to understand any complex principles and applicable regulations myself. Thanks for any help with this.

you can take some business and accounting courses at a local college.  you can also try "accounting for dummies" available at amazon or your local bookstore.

I’ve always heard that "it’s bigger in Texas", but as far as I’m concerned, accounting is the same in every state. Now, given the type of business, there may be state laws that require a certain method of accounting, or that certain things are accounted for seperately. — Snowmen fall from heaven unassembled. Ya ya, I’m here friend. Now what are you expecting to be written before I can speak as a person? Take a gander at this following paper, and tell me honestly what you think about my image. Or maybe, what you think we might or could do, to better ourselves as everyone. — From below: In It for US "Your either with US as equals under a rule of law as Universal Justice, or your a mindless slave whore Sacrificing your soul for bush, the anti-Christ, who will as he continues, stealing and murdering from our families without any good reason, or provocations as evil incarnate he is to US all." (Just another of those Youisms from Johnny, the Lord.) Then, a little later, some scribbles on the nazi terrorist Jew hater, that super evil mass murdering lifeless lump of waste byproduct, the leach whom we all know so well truly as a parasite of life’s will to steal ourselves from God as plundered, the stenching, blood soaked monster, henry kissing.. er.. ariel sharon: "How can killing, torturing, and [then] destroying the homes of [US] innocent civilians be considered anything but, terrorism?" Hey, what do you say in stopping them hurting US, by destroying them both American Patriot?, as we now let ourselves sort it out in the here after? Eh? Wake up friend… Then even further, don’t miss, the highly anticipated, "Corporate Street Gangs – Monsanto" that lists the ACTUAL individual people never mentioned by CNN, who perpetrate those hanious crimes against the American Public, and who have so far, escaped incarceration as multi-millionaire corporate successes. Again, none of any words world wide bare contention against the facts we’ve brought to our attention. The traitors to America, Our Mr. bush Jr. and rotten rumsfeld don’t mention the willingness of American Soldiers to apprehend general Ahmad as the principle terrorist funder of Atta, because this general is also responsible for developing the bushmob strategy of killing Americans in New York City from Washington. A strategy of blaming bin Laden without any evidence to bomb Afghanistan for Enron. (The Dahbol Working Group.) Then closing criminal investigations, as it’s not important to know who personally was responsible for the insider trades, or the contacting of only Odigo. Never mentioned by CNN as top priority to American soldier concerns, who are expected by Blitzer and Hemmer to throw away their lives in sacrifice unthinking to bush, america’s false deity, super evil anti-Christ.  While bush and cheney threaten to murder more dumb Americans who would dare to articulate the demand for Justice as our own, like Laden has, while demanding American Patriots cower in fear of the sadistic savage mass murdering death squad leader, tommy franks, or the anti-Christ going out to kill their family too as not represented by corporate policy, while American soldier families are continually disrespected as unworthy. (Generally, they are pretty damn stoopid, but certainly, if they’re not knowingly committing first degree murders for the anti-Christ as pure nazi filth, they should be allowed to learn, instead of having their own undefended families robbed then slaughtered for American traitor, nazi puke terrorist, tommy franks, or for Monsanto’s rotten rumsfeld.  Do you notice corporate America continues to show outdated footage of those two demons standing near smiling armed American soldiers, who as a mass of dumfuks, aren’t intelligent enough to destroy them instantly as established ememies of America as terrorists?  Well, that is going to change.  I have yet to find ANY American Soldier who is literate, who disagrees WE have some very important questions that need immediate answers before the bushmob murders more Americans in Our name.  See for yourself through Google if you don’t believe in Christ as the Redeemer. As for the doubting American Soldier, LOOK, CNN will continue as cult members in their dying madness of just even lamer excuses, to convince US, we are alone in our concerns for Freedom as Justice instills for US all. This moment of History requires you to stand strong for only yourself to be represented truly among the stars. Evil stupid people can’t make heads or tails of this, but, as evil bush does truly from his dark shallow existence, will continue by open piracy, to publicly advocate in Our names the further robbing and murder of your own family American Patriot, so too, will more american nazi dumfuks die to the tune of their own cowardice to protect themselves as garnered fairly. This is why rotten rumsfeld forbids the death tally of American soldiers to be made public to the ready for enlistment as the too dumb to know better.  Life is life, and sorry to say american dumfuks, Christ on the cross is you too as a true dying American Patriot, and your already politically sitting in the bush slave whore position of hatred and injustice against Humanity and myself honestly as..  THE SON OF MAN!  (The for real, no illusion, god of God’s life/death trade barter, with a score to settle on behalf of the infinite Universe and True brave Soldiers everywhere.  KILL AMERICAN COP KILLER BUSH NOW BEFORE HE MURDERS MORE LIKE OURSELVES IN OUR NAME AS THE INNOCENT COWARDS!) THINK, if I fly down there to Washington as a simple man, and destroy the cop killing demon monsters bush, rumsfeld, cheney, and franks with my bare hands in love as the timid Jesus of folklore, while salivating, how is that going to look to the perishioners, who, God love’em, just wouldn’t understand the finer art of akeido, huh? CNN is not interested in working for American interests by asking why, as there is little of any money in just doing good for your neighbor, like saving a living, as we would wish to be helped for ourselves, if we were bound just the same to be equals at being.  Mr.  Blitzer and Bill Hemmer, as americans, wouldn’t give a dollar of your time, to speak on human rights to be of their own concern, (they’re already rich by theft without talent as dying our death by murder as not spoken for really. Just like how they refuse to report on the blatant criminal lottery operations that steal from EVERYONE.) or to save the life of an innocent poor victim, if it meant they would therefor, be compelled to honestly report on their false deity bush, corporate america’s super evil criminal to ourselves as Humanity, the unelected dictator, American cop killing anti-Christ in person!, that they so leave to see Americans sacrificed as ignored to be robbed from, as their profit margin increases, from their, holyier than thou pulpits, leaving You all to get robbed and murdered by dumb nazi scum like reject tommy franks, the terrorizing death squad leader, woman and child killer.  We’re sure CNN, as others would say, as they do regarding sharon’s murder rampages against the innocent as God, nothing. Do less for America, The dying from stupidity People, and get payed more in collateral damages paid for by doubting Patriots, now mostly too slow to stand for the American flag in protection for their own living as lost to the wind without freedom to guide their own convictions.  Mr.  bush, tommy, rumsfeld, cheney and blair give no evidence to back an american soldier’s reason, but for to show themselves as the criminals who openly harbor terrorist activity against our communities, and WE, as Humanity, according to CNN, are expected to go out and kill our family and friends in cowardice, instead of standing up to destroy the evil demon bush instead, to save our own selves as worth consideration. God, or no God, I hate that murderer bush as much as any real man would to care for his own life as family. Johnny Wizard — HTTX 2.0b Title: Material Breach: US Crimes in Iraq Published on Saturday, November 30, 2002 by CommonDreams.org Material Breach: US Crimes in Iraq by Heather Wokusch D-Day of December 8th quietly approaches – the day Iraq must provide the UN Security Council with a complete accounting of its weapons programs, plus its civilian chemical/biological/nuclear production and research activities. Even though UN weapons inspectors have criticized the December 8th deadline as unrealizable, the consequences for missing it will be catastrophic: Iraq will be in "material breach" of UN resolution 1441, and therefore subject to swift and decisive military action. But at this point, UN 1441 seems little more than a whitewash pretext for a US-led attack on Iraq. With US warplanes patrolling Iraq’s no-fly zone, bombing raids against Iraq ongoing, multiple aircraft carriers on alert and 60,000 US troops currently in or around the Persian Gulf, it’s clear the war has already begun, "material breach" or not. When it’s convenient for the Bush administration, Iraq will be found to have violated some aspect of the UN resolution, and the current buildup and covert military activity will explode into an all-out attack. The justification (that Iraq’s Hussein violates international law with his weapons of mass destruction and is thus a menace to world peace) seems a bit ironic in light of US actions in Iraq these past eleven years. Case in point. Article 54 of the Geneva Conventions clearly states that destroying or rendering useless items essential to the survival of civilian populations is illegal under international law and a war crime. Hard then to explain the 1991 US bombing of electrical grids that powered 1,410 water-treatment plants for Iraq’s 22 million people. An excerpt from a 1998 US Air Force document, entitled "Strategic Attack," chillingly explains: "The electrical attacks proved extremely effective … The loss of electricity shut down the capital’s water treatment plants and led to a public health crisis from raw sewage dumped in the Tigris River." Tiger Woods' hypothetical 'rank' on the European Tour

Question:

Yep, a tongue in cheek, "You gotta be kidding me" kind of way.  And they put a mini driving range on the balcony of his hotel room too.  Some guys… errr… I’m green w/jealousy, but hey, I’d take the money too.  I’m no baseball expert, but he seems to be a better investment than ARod (for now). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Not sure whether you are saying this tongue-in-cheek or not, but I don’t think you will find that the German gnomes were in the least upset at [snip] I think it’s nuts that someone can get over a million bucks to show up and play golf, but obviously the people with the money think different!  -joseph To add insult to injury, Woods got 1st prize money in addition to his appearance fee, whatever that is.

Response:

As far as Woods hypothetical ranking in the European OoM I suspect he would actually be first – the Deutschbank Open and the Masters would net him a lot of Euros.  And his hypothetical ranking last year would have given him first place too.

Michael Campbell currently heads the European Tour Volvo OOM with E687,000. Woods placings on the current European Tour Schedule are: 1       Johnnie Walker Classic (Thailand)       E225,000 1       US Masters                              E1,146,000 T2      Dubai Desert Classic                    E138,000 1       Deutsche Bank SAP (Germany)             E450,000 Total   4 events                                E1,959,000 Cheers Colin Wilson RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/wilsonc.htm Trentham Golf Club: http://www.trenthamgolf.com

Response:

ESPN reported that Tiger would rank third on the order of

merit on SC the other night if he was qualified to do so.

As already pointed out. What they meant is that he would be 3rd in the ALLTIME European Money List. He would comfortably be first on this year’s OOM.

Response:

To add insult to injury, Woods got 1st prize money in addition to his appearance fee, whatever that is.  Anyone have a guess as to his place on the Order of Merit if he were able to qualify for it?  It’s got to be top 5.

ESPN reported that Tiger would rank third on the order of merit on SC the other night if he was qualified to do so.

Response:

His European OoM tour ranking is hypothetical because he doesn’t play in enough European Tour events to merit a European Tour card.

Yes, but since we’re being hypothetical, he could decide to play in enough events to get the card, right?  How many events more would he need?

Response:

His European OoM tour ranking is hypothetical because he doesn’t play in enough European Tour events to merit a European Tour card. Yes, but since we’re being hypothetical, he could decide to play in enough events to get the card, right?  How many events more would he need?

Well 11 is the number being bandied about as the minimum number of tournaments required to retain a tour card and so far Woods has played in 4 – the Johnnie Walker Classic (Thailand), the Dubai Desert Classic, the US Masters and the Deutsche Bank SAP.  He therefore needs to play in 7 more events.  The remaining three majors and the remaining two WGC events count towards the European Tour total so he needs to schedule in two more regular European Tour events. Crispin Roche

Response:

If Tiger had standing on the European Tour, he would have led its Order of Merit the past two years.  He needs to play 11 events this year to be considered … let’s see …   Johnnie Walker   Deutsche Bank   Dubai   Masters   US Open   British Open   PGA   NEC   World Championship Now … isn’t he playing in the Trophee Lancome?  That makes 10.  All he needs is one more, if I’m counting right. There will undoubtedly be complaints about the evils of co-sponsoring, but Tiger wins over half the time he plays on the European Tour, so it’s not as if it would be some kind of travesty if he had an Order of Merit title or two (or five) to his credit.   -joseph – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – To add insult to injury, Woods got 1st prize money in addition to his appearance fee, whatever that is.  Anyone have a guess as to his place on the Order of Merit if he were able to qualify for it?  It’s got to be top 5.

Response:

Not sure whether you are saying this tongue-in-cheek or not, but I don’t think you will find that the German gnomes were in the least upset at paying Tiger’s appearance fee, whatever it was.  The PGA Tour takes a position against appearance fees, but the situation in Europe is different.  The whole circumstances of professional golf, spectators, sponsors, etc. in Europe and the rest of the "European" Tour are different.  For their money they get more than four rounds of golf out of Tiger.  I’m sure the accounting includes one or more clinics, dinners, etc., which even without his showing up to play golf, attract spectators, television viewers, etc., would be worth a large fraction of the ~$2m. You won’t hear more than the vaguest mutterings from the PGA Tour about whatever fees Tiger collects, because they are still trying to figure out whether the suddenly more-than-doubled revenues and purses in pro golf are 100 percent Tiger’s doing, or just 50 percent. I think it’s nuts that someone can get over a million bucks to show up and play golf, but obviously the people with the money think different!   -joseph – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – To add insult to injury, Woods got 1st prize money in addition to his appearance fee, whatever that is.

Woods has won three tournaments this year that count on the European OOM: -Johnny Walker Classic in Thailand(first 2001 tournament for Euro) -Masters -Deutsch Bank Regards  John Stephens – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I heard that he was third on the ALL TIME European money list.  I forget who he passed — Ian Woosnam?

Response:

Chris, what they meant was he would be 3rd in the ALLTIME Euro Money list! This season he would be comfortably 1st in the Order of Merit and combined with the events he is due to play this year, the majors and the world championships, PLUS the Lancome Trophy is is playing in, he only has to play in ONE OTHER event to qualify for the OOM. Talk on Sky Sports suggests that he may enter the German Masters the week after the Ryder Cup to claim this honor. As we know, Tiger’s into records and this would surely be another… The Sea Ram – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – To add insult to injury, Woods got 1st prize money in addition to his appearance fee, whatever that is.  Anyone have a guess as to his place on the Order of Merit if he were able to qualify for it?  It’s got to be top 5. Tiger Woods has $US1.7 million in winnings derived from official euro tour events. He has played in 4. The Order of Merit leader is Michael Campbell, who has <$US 0.7 million. Woods has only (only ha, ha!) won 7 European Tour events, i.e. his two wins in Thailand, the Asian Honda Classic, his two DeutschBank Opens and the Open Championship. I think he’s won three this year. The one in Thailand was the beginning of this year, plus the Masters which counts also. So I would think he’d probably be first on the money list, if you double counted for each tour.

State does not recognize designation

Question:

I’m an Independently Chartered Financial Analyst in the State of Ohio. Although the requirements for my designation exceed those for a CPA or CFP in many respects (we are prohibited from attest work or the sale of insurance or stocks [even though many of us have series 63 and series 7 licenses]}  In several states we can operate under the Public Accountancy laws…. however Ohio no longer recognizes PA’s.  I am currently looking at buying into an accounting practice however since I am not "certifiable" under the state’s definitions I am stuck in limbo.  I have been with this firm for over 7 years now so I know I have the background necessary ( I have been doing all the Workpapers and Reports as well as postings account setups etc for 6 of the 7 years).  My other problem is that my accounting education came from a foreign university that the state will not accept… they tell me I will need to get at least 40 credit hours from an accredited school.  I took an equivalency test passed it but they said they still will not accept my degree. Does anyone have any ideas I what I could do?  I would hate to have to go back to school for a degree I already have. Btw there are approximately 10,000 persons with my designation in the United States and a larger number overseas.

Response:

Although the requirements for my designation exceed those for a CPA or CFP in many respects (we are prohibited from attest work…

One minor problem–that *IS* what a CPA is effectively licensed to do.   The other special right conferred upon CPAs is the right to represent clients before the IRS, though that right is shared with EAs and attorneys.  Both rights are intertwined with US specific requirements (US GAAP/GAAS and the Internal Revenue Code), just as the rights to practice in other countries are tied to their accountancy provisions. I assume your problem is that you want to obtain an ownership interest in a firm that holds itself out as a CPA firm in Ohio, and Ohio prohibits ownership by non-CPAs.  The first question I’d ask is whether the firm truly needs to be a CPA firm?  What does the firm gain by being a CPA firm?  And if the answer is that it performs the services mentioned above, then we have the problem that you aren’t licensed to do that. If the answer is that you want the CPA certificate for marketing purposes, perhaps you should consider educating your market about the quality of your current certification. Otherwise, I think your only option is to qualify as a CPA under Ohio law–and that isn’t going to happen based on an arguments about the merits of various certificates, but is going to be based upon the Ohio Code specific requirements to obtain the license.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Although the requirements for my designation exceed those for a CPA or CFP in many respects (we are prohibited from attest work… One minor problem–that *IS* what a CPA is effectively licensed to do.

I think the point was 2 fold…. he cannot operate as a Public Accountant [ the state still recognizes those who were in existence prior to the termination of Public Accountancy but will not license or recognize new applicants. ] and the state board doesn’t recognize his degree.  I have known individuals personally that have passed the equivalency test and still be refused recognition.

NASA, R&D, aerospace and SUBSIDIES !

Question:

Interestingly, there was a short discussion on how some may not like to admit to this being a subsidy, but that it was necessary and that the government should not be stopped by such "name calling" because it was critical for the USA to continue and in fact increase such spending to ensure the survival of the industry against its foreign competitors. Does Airbus benefit from similar arrangements in Europe? If the US spends money in NASA developing aviation technology, which is then shared with Boeing, this sounds like a non-repayable subsidy far more intrusive than, say, the recent UK loan for the 3XX. Do the consortium member countries have similar agencies? The ESA doesn’t do much of anything related to civil aviation, but are there others that both do and do it with public money?

There sure is.  In France, it’s ONERA; in Germany, the DLR; in the Netherlands, the NLR; in the UK, DERA; in Australia, ARL; in Canada, NRL; and so on.  Those are just the ones I’ve visited, I’m sure there are more.  Any country that builds aircraft will have a aeronautics research institute which may also do rocketry.  In addition, many countries have technical schools, subsidized by the government, that do aeronautical and space research. — Mary Shafer    http://www.dfrc.nasa.gov/People/Shafer/mary.html Senior Handling Qualities Research Engineer NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA

Actually, I was playing devil’s advocate. In a previous life, I have visited all of these companies in the past (and a whole lot more, some that don’t exist now or were absorbed into others, in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Holland) as a potential customer. For the general public, though, there is only Boeing left in the US commercial aerospace industry. Normand

I suspect that the European Space Agency acts in much the same way as Nasa. And lets not forget that a lot of nations benefit from NASA althoughUS manufacturers are the primary benefactors. Also, NASA benefits from the spending of ESA, the CSA (canadian space agency), the japanese etc etc. Heck, NASA has acquired a lot of knoweledge and expertise from the Russians lately (at bargain basement prices).

Response:

Ugh. This again. While the US Govt does not in any way subsidize the devlopment or production of =commercial jetliners<=, they certainly have other dealings with Boeing that result in financial gain thereto. Furthermore, the technological overlaps which inevitably occur between that which is funded and that which isn’t, result undeniably in value passing to the jetliner program. Boeing’s finances, adhering to SEC regulations, are =relatively<= open books. Airbus’ are relatively opaque. The old opacity meter reads: (out of ten) Boeing  8 Airbus ?2? Thus the subsidy-to-commercial-jetliners meter reads something like: Boeing  2 Airbus ?2-5? We just don’t ?know?, do we. Fortunately, as the EU works to improve capital liquidity and thereby grease up the ol’ economic gearbox, more transparent accounting practices (notoriously absent in Europe) are down the road somewhere. Conceded: industries like aviation are ’special’ and must not always be left to the punishing forces of Adam Smith’s hand. Perhaps others might be willing to concede that Airbus likely hasn’t turned a genuine profit on jetliner sales. Which might be OK. And might not. Now, for the definition of ‘genuine profit’…

NASA is the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, and its remit includes aviation research.  ESA’s does not.

I think that those who underestimate the involvement of the USA govt through NASA would rethink their opinions about subsidies. And let’s not forget that Germany’s DLR, Britain’s DERA, the Netherlands’ NLR, France’s ONERA, and other European agencies have spent significant money on R&D that have benefited Airbus.  Airbus certainly did not use its "own" money to develop technologies such as composite materials, FBW, etc.  Furthermore, NASA’s R&D that are directly applicable for commercial aircraft builder is only a small part of NASA’s total budget.

Ahh, but this is where that US committee was interesting because it clearly showed how the money spent by NASA (eg: taxpayers money) benefits the US aerospace industry, and how, for instance, NASA research helped produce aircraft engines much more efficient than in the 60s etc etc.  It seems that NASA’s work has greatly benefitted the commercial aviation industry, not just space stuff. Lemme see, the "commercial aerospace industry" would be Boeing and… It seems pretty evident to me that NASA has been a huge R&D engine which has benefitted the US industry for some 40 years.  And the argumenty was made that like it or not, this must continue (and actually increase to make up for reduced military spending) in order for us industry to remain competitive.

Response:

Was watching NASA TV for a while, and they were airing some senate subcommittee meeting on the future of aviation in the USA. Dan Golden (NASA’s big cheese) as well as US aerospace industry representatives made presentations. I think that those who underestimate the involvement of the USA govt through NASA would rethink their opinions about subsidies. NASA has had a huge involvement in developping new technologies and research which directly benefitted the commercial aerospace industry in the USA. And the argument being presented now was that with military spending down, private industry had even fewer funds to fund their R&D and that it was crucial that funding for R&D be increased in order to keep up with overseas competitors. (It was pointed out how the USA had lost market share against the europeans). NASA is working on many aspects, from helping the FAA to develop new air traffic control system to allow growth in traffic at US airports, ways to increase air safety to the ultimate luxury car that flies from A to B by pressing a button. (those who think Airbus is over automated, better prepare yourselves for that one :-) NASA is also involved in finding new engine technologies to meet noise reduction and pollution goals. And now for the big shocker (are you sitting down ERIKG3 ?), the industry saids that it needs to invest 70 billion in the next 10 years  for R&D alone just to allow the US industry to meet the challenges of a growing market and expecteation of increased safety. It says that it is willing to invest 20 billion if the fed govt invests 50 billion for R&D. Of course, it was mentioned that the aerospace was, by far, the biggest exporter in the USA and generated lots of jobs, and that it was essential to keep its leadership, otherwise, more production would be shifted to overseas companies which would not only decrease exports, but also increase imports. It seems pretty evident to me that NASA has been a huge R&D engine which has benefitted the US industry for some 40 years.  And the argumenty was made that like it or not, this must continue (and actually increase to make up for reduced military spending) in order for us industry to remain competitive.

Looking for Software

Question:

I recently found this forum through a web search.  I realize that I am way out of my league here, but thought perhaps you could help me.  We own a small family business.  We have no receivables, no payables, no liabilities to be tracked with the exception of payroll.  I am in desperate need of new bookkeeping (not accounting) software.  I have been using Quicken since DOS versions, in combination with QuickPay, and it worked well for me.  Now with the advent of QuickPayroll, and the mandatory online subscription service, I find myself in a bind, since I refuse to put my business computer online.  I thought perhaps an easy solution would be to use QuickBooks (my accountant shared the new tax tables with me).  Not so simple!  QB has WAY too many features, that get in the way of the very BASIC work I need to do.  All I really need is a simple checkwriting program with category sorting functions and payroll that integrates with the ledger (QB’s is a separate function, requiring payroll checks to be printed separately from other checks).  Can anyone suggest anything??  I am so frustrated with QB that I am ready to go back to figuring payroll manually and use the simplest checkwriter I can find …….  My accountant is no help on this subject, just doesn’t know enough about the market.  Can anyone give me any suggestions? * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Response:

You might check out One Write (it might be called One Write Plus).  The version I saw was very simple and didn’t have a lot of the features that a quickbooks or peachtree has.  It may have been upgraded since then, however, and might now be feature-rich. I think you’ll have trouble finding packaged software without a lot of extraneous features.  The software makers have to add features to satisfy the broadest range of customers and to justify their prices.  For what you do, an Excel spreadsheet or a series of linked spreadsheets might be the ticket. Response:

You know, I really liked Quicken for my work.  Even Quicken Basic did what I needed it to do, although I didn’t use any of the advanced features.  But I am so frustrated with Intuit (as so many others are!!) that I don’t really want to support them any longer.  Peachtree is definitely overkill, as is QB, which I am currently using and can’t live with.  I looked at One-Write (which is a Peachtree software), and couldn’t even find the check register on it, plus their payroll works about the same as QB, "integrated" but separate from regular checkwriting features.  I don’t think I want to do this on spreadsheet, since I really like writing checks on the computer. What I am using now is QB99, and have a copy of the current tax tables on disk.  Problem is that my payroll is not simple — I’m always holding money out of my employees’ checks for odd things that can’t be easily addressed in the QB payroll functions.  For example, my nephew got hold of the corporate VISA and charged his pager bill … now I’ve got to withhold that from his pay, but paying the VISA bill, it can’t be recorded as a liability for him.  Or we’ll buy rubber boots that the employees might buy from us — supplies for us (family members), but liability for the other men??  With the old QuickPay, I was able to modify the check after it was processed (before it was printed) to include these things, but can’t do that with QB. I doubt that outsourcing my payroll would help my situation.  Aside from my situation above, there is the fact that when the men want to be paid, I’m expected to drop everything and write the checks.  Ah, the joys of a family business!  So do I have any other software options, or do I go back to Quicken Basic (which I liked) and account for my payroll manually without the online tax tables? * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Partnerships

Question:

Is there a CPA in the group that could answer the following question for me? Can a partnership operate under two different sets of percentages? If a partnership is formed between four people and a tax ID # is issued on that partnership, can it then open an account at one brokerage firm for trading stocks under one set of percentages (70/10/10/10%) and then open up another account at another brokerage firm for trading stock index futures under a different set of percentages (25/25/25/25%), and then somehow have both of these accounts file under the same tax ID #? We inadvertently set up two accounts this way, giving the same tax ID number to both brokerage firms. Now, the CPA that is doing our taxes is telling us that this can’t be done and that we will just have to use the 70/10/10/10 numbers for both accounts and then the partners will have to settle up on the side to compensate for the descrepancy on the other account. Thanks for the help, George

Response:

It seems that the profit and/or ownership split among the partners should be no concern of the brokerage firm.  Any allocatioins are done at the partnership level on the partnership books or by the partnership accountant in preparing the partnership tax return. The partnership agreement which controls allocation of partnership allocations could conceivable provide a different allocation for different ventures as long as the appropriate bookkeeping and tax filing was in accordance with it.

– I hope you don’t send emails to prospective employers with the link to the Ramones website. That said, what type of career are you looking for, public or private?  Having graduated from a CUNY school [Baruch] I imagine that Queens college has job fairs and career advisement.  They can be a fantastic resource for someone starting a career.  Watch the Sunday Newday, they frequently run ads for job fairs. What newspapers are you looking at?  Depending on where you live and want to work, the Sunday Times and Newsday are very good.  I found my first job through The Times. What headings are you looking at?  You probably would want to focus on entry level accounting and finance positions.  Not all jobs are listed under the heading "accounting".  The first few times through the newspaper[s] of you choice read the entire classified section.  This may take some time but it is well worth it.  As I said, not all accounting jobs are listed in the accounting section of the classifieds.  After a while you will get a feel where some of the jobs you are interested in are listed. If you see a job listing requirements slightly ahead of your skillset,  send them a resume anyway.  You never know, they may be having trouble filling the position or may simply be willing to give someone junior a chance. It is not easy or fun, but if you can present yourself well and have a polished resume, and are willing to put in some work, you will find yourself with a job.  You really need to put effort into the whole process.  Something I learned early in my career is that no interview is a waste of time. Whether good or bad, you can usually learn something about yourself or the process, not to mention that every interview is an opportunity to polish you presentation. Good luck. Mondo

Response:

The preferred procedure, as described in the User’s Guide and Help, is to record each transaction separately.  This let’s you keep track of your credit card balance on a continuous basis, no surprise when you receive the statement.  As well, it’s sometimes difficult to remember details of a transaction on the basis of the limited description on the credit card statement.  And, users in some countries must record tax credit information that appears on the original invoice but not on the credit card statement. However, many do as Dick Kusleika describes.  Note that it is important, as Dick describes, to allocate the charges to specific accounts; it is not sufficient to just record the total as "credit card expenses". What does your accountant advise?

Industry Software

Question:

Yes I am a programmer and need the work, no got more on my plate then I care to at this point. I remember that this thread started off of a vertical application industry? Was it motor home sales? How do you book in a transaction like that?  There is a down payment, amount financed, potential trade in.  Fees that are due to government that are not just sales tax? What about warranty protections, and all that paperwork?  Would any of your high end solutions be able to stock in a motor home? Probably not.  If so I would love to see it assign a stock # separate to its VIN.  And that trade in, would that take the stock # from it’s parent and append a letter or decimal afterwards? How about repairs to trade ins?  How do you track that, keep their warranties straight?  Now the requestor wanted to deal with salesman in specific ways.  Sounded like a PIM with an attitude. How about putting people into pending sales conditions, while you try to get the best funding packages?  What about changing the selling price depending on the funding?  All these are real issues in the industry. I can’t see an off the shelf package that can be that versatile.  I’ve seen allot of them and they are build around wholesale distribution.  The Motor Home industry does not fit that model. Secondly the original poster just wanted a lead on vertical software. They replied to me personally and stated their frustration in not getting usable information.  He would have felt better if someone said " Sorry but I don’t know of any" or "I helped a client with XYZ ware and it worked or didn’t" __Stephen Russell Memphis VFP User Group – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Wrong Again Sherlock…… The products that my company represents are not "Mom & Pop" accounting products like Quicken and they are certainly not cheap. They do however offer small to medium sized companies with a strong, proven base of accounting functionality  that can then be modified using industry standard tools to meet the specific needs.  Why in the world would anyone recommend a 100% custom written accounting package to a small business that could benefit from something off the shelf like Platinum, Great Plains or Solomon? The only reason that I can think of is that you are a programmer and you need the work…… I would suggest that you consider looking at products that are more general in nature as opposed to "industry specific" for the mobile home industry. I doubt that your needs are so unique that you could not use an "off the shelf" accounting system. You have many options…. much will depend on your budget. As an accountant and having done computer consulting for many years, I can tell you that the majority of "off the shelf" packages don’t come anywhere close.  Given your i.d., I’d say you are one of the very ones who think that cheap off the shelf packages could accomplish the goals I am looking for. Customers buy into this philosophy and think that quicken is a solution for everything.  Unfortunately, these very things keep the talented programmers from spending time to write (and customers from buying) a package that may actually be needed.  I have spent some time on this issue and what I was looking for was ANSWERS.

I have to agree with Dee Dee.  Although, I’ve had my problems with Business Works in the past year, overall it does work well in the areas you have specified. — Gina M. Response:

Sorry but some business don’t fit off the shelf {crap}.  Why settle for less? I have a vertical application and you think that it’s not worthy of looking at?  It fits the User Car Sales industry.  I too track may of the items that Perry is looking to track.  A standard system is designed for repeat business, and customer information.  I’m sure that Perry’s system might track a customer for 2 purchases?  Does he collect payments?  How about trade ins? I bet that you could’nt do advances to salesman against potential commissions the those off the shelf packages?  It’s FUN to do that kind of programming. __Stephen Russell Memphis VFP User Group – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I would suggest that you consider looking at products that are more general in nature as opposed to "industry specific" for the mobile home industry. to grad school for criminology, minoring in computers. , many people I talk with are stunned at my choices because they are so opposite in nature.

actually, they really aren’t. perhaps you could take accounting, minor in criminology/sociology, and work for the FBI. They like accountants. Hello, I can’t believe it took me this long to discover there would be an accouting newgroup, oh well.  I know you are not here to counsel a lost, confused undergrad student who cannot make up her mind in what to do with herlife, but I am on my last leg.  I just thought I would give it a shot to see what you guys had to say.  I started out as an accounting major my first year of school, then strangely enough switched to Sociology, which has been very rewarding.  Since this switch I have reflected back and have questioned the decision.  I like scoiology, and if I stayed with this field, I would go to grad school for criminology, minoring in computers.  However, I still feel like I could be just as happy in the accounting field.  I don’t know what to do, many people I talk with are stunned at my choices because they are so opposite in nature.  I can’t help it, I really like both.  I know no one can tell me what to do, it is a decision I need to make on my own, but I guess what I am asking here, is what type of non social rewards do you receive from your career and if you could do it again would you still choice it?  Thanks for your time, maybe something will spark with me in reading your responses.  Also, if I were to go into the accounting field, I think I would do taxes, or auditing.. what exactly do these two entail?  Tanisha
