Accounting & Bookkeeping Business

Question:

Hello Everyone, I am going to start taxation & bookkeeping business here in British Columbia, Canada. What software would you recommend for bookkeeping? For tax T1 & T2, I decided to use Profile from Intuit Canada. Thanks for any feedback.

Response:

In my opinion, that depends to some degree upon what type of clientele you are after and the type of professional services you want to provide in addition to bookkeeping (write-up), if any. The type of clientele may also depend upon where you are located (I spent the first years of my professional life in the East Kootenays and a brother (also a CGA) practiced in Burnaby – both of us had a totally different client mix.). If you are interested in talking about it in more detail, contact me via email with your phone number and I’ll call you. Wolfgang Rochow, CGA Calgary, AB, Canada

Response:

If you choose to specialize in only QuickBooks master it frontwards and backwards.  too many accountants don’t know it well enough to do the proper job their clients need.  Keep multiple versions on hand.  Conisder adding QB set up to your biz services offered.  I did quite well with it, when I was working as a QB consultant.  I preferred the teaching and set up to write up bookkeeping.  I did both, with most of my income coming from set ups, cleanups and updating the books and training office bookkeepers to use it. I didn’t advertise as a tax preparer, a luctravie business in and of itself. Ultimately closed my biz do to health problems and can’t face starting up with no capital, long hours and roping the family into helping me put mailings together. KG

Response:

If you use a computerized accounting system, it should close the profits into retained earnings when you close the year. In manual accounting, you would have to make a journal entry to eliminate all income and expense accounts, closing them into retained earnings, otherwise you would carry over these accounts into the new year instead of starting with zero balances.  Also, otherwise, you would have an income (Profit & Loss) statement showing multi-year incomes/profits.

What if you went to Mass this Sunday and there was no priest?

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My oldest son is 12.  Wants to go to Annapolis.  If he does, that will make the Army-Navy football game more interesting. :0) Bruce My youngest has it all figured out. He is going to college to become a zoologist and at the same time play basketball. He will then sign with a pro-team after college and be a spokesman for something to do with animal charities. He will marry and after he retires from basketball, he will open a nature center and then become a deacon. All I can do is smile, his brother was going to become a professional football player and is now an engineer. His sister at one time aspired to be a professional cheerleader and will be graduating in May with a degree in accounting. I wanted to be a roller derby queen until age 8. Since the derby has been reborn, perhaps there is still a chance for me…once I manage to get over my dislike of pain.

My soon to be nine-year-old son wants to play baseball for the University of Texas.  So I said, "Oh, you want to go to school at UT"?  He said no, he just wants to play baseball there. I don’t think he has quite grasped the big picture yet….LOL!!! — Bruce Never ask a man where he is from.  If he is from Texas, he will tell you. If he’s not, don’t embarrass him.

Where do you live that priests are increasing? In my diocese last year we had 2 new priests and 5 retiring- you do the math.  Dawn

US-produced priests are down about 18% since 1965 to 1998.   However, the priests coming to the US from other parts of the world are making up most of the shortfall. The great part is of course that kids in the US are returning to a religion-centered lifestyle in droves.  Out of that will come a certain percentage of new religious. These are needed of course.  The growth in the RCC in the US has kept close pace with the population growth in the US, where the RCC population was 24% in 1965, and 23% since 1975 to now (1998). duke duke One day every tongue will confess You are God. One day every knee will bow. Still the greatest treasure remains for those who gladly choose you now.

OT: U.S. Gun rights again

Question:

An appellate court is hearing the government’s appeal of U.S. v. Emerson, a Texas case resulting from a divorce action that resulted in Dr. Timothy Emerson being indicted by a federal grand jury.  Emerson was in violation of the Lautenberg Amendment – a local court had placed a restraining order against him, making it against federal law for him to possess a firearm. In April 1999, U.S. District Court Judge Sam Cummings ruled that this law was an unconstitutional infringement of the "individual right to bear arms." Cummings set aside the indictment, and in doing so, struck a grievous blow to the gun prohibitionists. Of course, the government appealed the decision. The following is from the transcript of oral arguments: Judge William L. Garwood: "You are saying that the Second Amendment is consistent with a position that you can take guns away from the public? You can restrict ownership of rifles, pistols and shotguns from all people? Is that the position of the United States?" Assistant U.S. Attorney William B. Mateja: "Yes." Garwood: "Is it the position of the United States that persons who are not in the National Guard are afforded no protections under the Second Amendment?" Mateja: "Exactly." Mateja then argued that even membership in the National Guard would not qualify an individual to possess firearms. Garwood: "Membership in the National Guard isn’t enough? What else is needed?" Mateja: "The weapon in question must be used IN the National Guard." The above represents the position of the Clinton/Gore administration. No matter which side wins this appeal, the other will certainly appeal to the Supreme Court. If Gore is elected he will appoint Supreme Court Justices who support this position.

Swat Teams are sort of like guns in general,  it’s better to have them, & not need then, that to need one, & not have it.    I realize, for folks who react to the the "G word" (Government!) in the same way as when "Niagara Falls!" is mentioned in the old Three Stooges, & Abbot & Costello movies, this is a real sore spot, but the abolition of all Swat outfits sure ain’t the way to go either…    There will always be screw ups, bad calls, & campaigns that fail. However, high speed chase victims outnumber bungled Swat operations by about a 100 to 1…    The philosophy of "I won’t bother you, if you don’t bother me…" just doesn’t have a place in law enforcement.                                                       Don

Just who are those swat teams going to be used against. Here in Florida they call them out for a barking dog. The official explination is they need the practice or if they dont use them enough maybe some one will ask how much they cost. Problem with police swat teams is they think they are a spec. war group but they dont have the time and especially money to train that well so they arent as good as some think they are.

On the contrary, they are an ever-present danger to everybody. A case to point is the Ruby Ridge episode. An ATF agent named Birley (sp?) became angry at Weaver when he refused to snitch for him. The local sheriff already had a grudge because Weaver had run against him for sheriff and refused to let the sheriff use a right-of-way for sheep/cattle across Weaver’s land for tourists. So they manufactured a lie about Weaver being a Green Beret training skin heads to rob banks and called in the SWAT team to get even. Next thing we know a federal marshal and Weaver’s son and wife are dead and we are paying $2mil reparations. These were federal marshals and FBI’s HRT! Imagine a bunch of squirrels from IRS or BATF and you have another Waco.

I’ll give you one worse than that.  I was at an Atlanta area range a few  years ago and saw an EPA wannabe SWAT team practicing. Whathehell does the damned EPA need with ninja-clothed jackbooted thugs?  What are they going to do, machine-gun a 55 gallon drum?  I can see it now "Don’t drop that gum wrapper or we’ll shoot!".  After watching them shoot for a bit, I wasn’t too worried about them actually hitting anyone. — John De Armond http://personal.bellsouth.net/~johngd/ Cleveland, TN

To see one of the latest attempts at a National firearms registration program, this time through the IRS, go to http://www.senate.gov/ and perform a number search of S2099, a Republican sponsored bill now in the Senate Finance Committee. Then, for a plain language explanation of the bill, which, by the way, would also levy an additional tax on firearms, go to http://www.thelibertycommittee.org/s2099summary.htm . Mike, CA RVChem.net – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks for the heads up even if it is on the RV news group. If it were our first amendment right in debate here, people & the press would be up in arms. The above represents the position of the Clinton/Gore administration. No matter which side wins this appeal, the other will certainly appeal to the Supreme Court. If Gore is elected he will appoint Supreme Court Justices who support this position.

Since this Bill was introduced by Jack Reed, Dem from RI and co- sponsored by Frank Lautenburg, Dem, NJ, and Charles Schumer, Dem, NY, I wonder how you get the idea that it is republican sponsored?????? I wouldn’t bet on that yet.  In the past 65 years the feds have lost numerous such cases, but rather than risk establishing a national precedent, they have let the matter die at the district court level.  Of course, they do not advertise which laws are unenforcable in which districts.  :) the Supreme Court. Yes You can run my business

Question:

Has anyone had any experience with this Access product. Thanks — Jay Beckham

Response:

I’m sure this is all very good software – I think it is put out by Cary Prague software. However in the world of accounting software I really recommend staying with the market leaders. On the low cost side – it would be QuickBooks or Peachtree. On the higher cost side – it would be either MAS90, Solomon, Great Plains, Macola or Accpac. Beyond these you may have increased risk that a smaller company stops developing, etc…. Regards, Wayne Has anyone had any experience with this Access product. Thanks

Response:

Hi Wayne Thanks for the response. In most circumstances I would agree with you. Also for most people your advice is well taken. However, I work in Access and I see this as an opportunity to take some established software and then change it to suit my clients better than I could expect with most packaged and unchangeable programs such as Quick Books and Peachtree. So I am still interested in hearing from anyone that has used any of Cary Prague products.  I have worked some with the demo and mixed opinions at this moment. Thanks James Beckham

Response:

I can’t speak about Cary Prague specifically. They do appear to be a long time player in the MS Access based accounting software world. Most businesses are better advised to avoid customization where possible and to stay with the market leaders. Benefit: Less headaches, regular software updates, more consultants who will support the product (few consultants are overjoyed to pick up someone elses custom software project). The growth days for customizing software packages like SBT are all but over imho. The only companies I see doing this are those that truly cannot get a solution elsewhere. I too am an Access developer, specializing in accounting type systems. I have been able to assist several businesses simplify their operations via an Access based system. While I do agree that these off-the-shelf packages are lower in cost, it is hard to get them to do specialized activities many small businesses have. Instead of fitting every business to 2 software packages, why not have a software system that can be easily modified for the business. Before this subject gets touchy, my intent here is not put down Quick Books and Peach Tree since I feel these packages do have their benefits over Access systems. However, I also feel that Access based systems have benefits over these apps and that each person should closly weigh the pros and cons of each system in leiu of depending on generalizations about each type of system. Access based systems are not like traditional custom programs that can only be understood by the developer. Access makes it easy to create custom forms, reports as well as add additional data to be stored. As far a staying with standardized software, Access is a standard software and finding someoneto create/modify an Access application is as easy as opening up the yellow pages or contacting Microsoft to recommend a certified developer in your area.  Try doing this with Peach Tree or Quick Books. The one suggestion that I do make is to ensure that you have the files that you can modify yourself. If you do not have these then you are stuck with that developer. Personally, I provide these files to my clients but have them sign an agreement that prevents them legally using the package for other businesses or any part of the system as part of a system that they decide to market themselves. Just another opinion… Bob Munoz            CreaTech Solutions     Custom Business Software Systems,          Solutions and Services   Web: http://www.themetro.com/createch
