5 U.S. Soldiers Dead After Copter Crash In Afghanistan

Question:

Happy Eid Afghanistan 5 U.S. Soldiers Dead After Copter Crash In Afghanistan WASHINGTON, November 24 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – In another setback for the U.S. military, a combat helicopter carrying troops on a nighttime mission crashed outside an American military base near the Afghan capital Kabul Sunday, November 23, killing at least five soldiers and injuring seven others. Coming on the heels of a spate of deadly helicopter crashes in Iraq, the incident is certain to raise new questions about U.S. military engagements overseas at a time when President George W. Bush is beginning to campaign for re-election on the merits of his "war on terror", commented Agence France-Presse (AFP). Although no formal announcement has been made, the downed helicopter is presumably a highly classified MH-53 Pave Low, one of the largest and most technologically advanced choppers in the world, used primarily in special operations. "It was an MH-53 transport helicopter. The personnel on board were Army and Air Force," Major Mike Escudie, a spokesman for the U.S. Central Command, told AFP. The only other U.S. helicopter of the MH-53 series, the Sea Dragon, belongs to the Navy and is used in minesweeping operations. In a three-paragraph written statement, Central Command said the cause of the crash remained unknown and was under military investigation. "The service members were supporting Operation Mountain Resolve," the command said without providing any further details. But Escudie said the helicopter crashed as it was heading into the mountains from Bagram Air Base at about sunset and was destroyed on impact. Operation Mountain Resolve was launched earlier this month in an effort to hunt down Taliban supporters and other militants in northeastern Nuristan and Kunar provinces. One of its key goals is to deny sanctuary to remnants of the ousted Taliban regime and its al-Qaeda supporters through finding and destroying weapons caches and bases presumably located in the mountainous region, according to defense officials. No information about the condition of the injured was immediately available, according to Escudie. "What’s limiting a final determination is the extent of the damage at the site, which was inhibiting a full and final accounting," he pointed out. Escudie said it was impossible to say whether the aircraft had encountered any ground fire. "It’s a tragedy," Republican Senator Jon Kyl commented in a television interview. But the Arizona lawmaker stressed it was important for the United States to stay the course in Afghanistan and Iraq, despite mounting losses in both countries. "I think it’s important for Americans… to convey the message to the enemy that we can persevere longer than they can, that we have the willpower to stay in this fight," Kyl told the Fox News Channel, according to AFP. The MH-53 Pave Low is distinguished from its less sophisticated counterparts by its terrain-avoidance radar, forward-looking infrared sensor and projected map display, which enable the crew to avoid obstacles while maintaining extremely low altitudes. It is protected with armor plating and three machine guns, and can transport 38 troops. Combat helicopters of this type have been used to infiltrate and extract special forces teams in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world, experts told AFP. Seventeen U.S. soldiers were killed  earlier this month when two Black Hawk helicopters collided over northern Iraq. Another six died when another Black Hawk was brought down by ground fire outside a U.S. base near the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit. Earlier, a U.S. CH-47 Chinook was shot down by a surface-to-air missile near Fallujah, killing 16 U.S. soldiers. http://islamonline.net

Why don’t we work together on a group course?  Here is an initial set of ethics koans. 1.  Client A, being fully aware of the needs of society and the importance of governance, nevertheless, forms an intent to minimize his taxes, and having several taxable entities of moderate complexity, engages PriceWaterhouse Coopers to create a filing position that saves him $10,000. Client B, having a firm intent to minimize his taxes, and having a small schedule C business, erases his cost of goods sold and changes it, saving $10,000. Which is more unethical, and why? 2.  Partner in CPA firm hires the dumbest people he can find, yet still having CPA certificates.  He confers at length with all of his clients, but gives partial information to his staff, and gives it in a highly disorganized condition, for tax return preparation. A strict regime of time constraints is also imposed on the staff CPAs. When the tax returns are completed the Partner reviewer does not correct most errors in the taxpayer’s favor, but militantly corrects all overtaxation errors. Thus by a combination of staffing selection and time constraints he realizes a harvest of tax savings for benefit of clients.  In turn, he achieves above normal economic returns from the practice. Does the fact that each particular error originated with the staff CPA preparer mitigate the ethical responsibility of the partner in any way? 3.  In 1976, the top marginal tax rate in NY city and state was 15%, and the top Federal tax rate was 70%.  Taxpayer A having real taxable income of $500,000 owed taxes of $350,000. Question:

Hi, every one, I am Winnie Lau and studying for an honours degree in pscyhology at USQ. As part of my course, I am doing a thesis, the aim of which is to investigate the behaviour of children and associated stress in parents.  In this study, there are THREE groups, "intact" two parent, single parent and foster carer.  I have started to invite the participants since last semester.  I have invited the participants at primary school and family centre.  However, there are no more single parent.  Because the due date is coming, I would like to invite the single parent via internet in order to save time. Finally, if you are (1) single parent                              (2) have at least one child aged between 6 and 14, please contact me.  I need your help.  If you have interested in my research, please send me your name and postal address to me. Thank you for your interest in my research. Regards, Winnie Lau

Response:

Winnie, go away with this shit … You got boundary problems, seek therapy sweetie. Go to your thesis supervisor and delay your project, wait for you to find someone local like you did for ALL the other research participants you already have seen and personally been with. Like Cheops law, nothing gets built on time or within budget. Brain Surgeons have an 8 or 12 year internship on their time, like you are trying to save time, find another patient to practice on and make your report and get your degree. Brain Surgeons take so long to train like you are in training – cause brain surgery patients are not so frequent. Ya know you have to get it from your patient pool, and what kind of doctor goes out and rushes the patient pool for brain surgery … wants to save time. Noooooooo, they wait for the patient to come to them, that is how research is done in the United States any way. Sounds like your supervisors are really fucked ya know to let you lose like this going outside of your selected and agreed to parameters you have already followed except for just ONE participant. right. ya, sure. alan alan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, every one, I am Winnie Lau and studying for an honours degree in pscyhology at USQ. Hi Dan Its not a real interest for me to triangulate with you over this person (identity unknown and purpose suspect) and what they care about or not in a supposed clinical situation.  Such action I have found to be a waste of time. I am giving her the benefit of the doubt, like I do you, that both of you have some personal interest to learn; being you claim to be in education. Which is the only reason why I am being civil to you and to the other person who you are supposing dont care about other people and their own personal hypocrisy. You know, being sick in the head. Its part of the nature of the Beast and how it always goes to it Armageddon. If you have some recovery issues over this Dan – go ahead and post them. I am trying to talk to a person who doesn’t care to be talked to or to examine their thesis and education … which I hope you know its what a thesis is all about, you know … open examination …seeing the light of day … that is if you care …. like my professors of psychology cared in my Master’s Program (Class of 83, SSU Alumni). Since this person dont care and dont care to talk about it – one could think they are not honest and their intentions are suspect …. untoward. FYI my thesis is published and in the SSU library. Its entitled "Psychogenic Health Transformations". You will notice if you care to look that Dr. Eleanor Criswell, a current Professor Of Psychology, Sonoma State University was one of the members of my Masters Committee. As to the other person who is showing a face that they are in Australia and not the United States and that is all you wanted to comment on, well great, thanks for sharing. I also know about the changes in SSU, I live just down the road and drive by the campus all the time. Oh by the way, I would really appreciate it if in the future you confine your contacts to me in the public domaine; it far to much work for me to deal with you privately. Oh, and if you haven’t been to SSU for awhile, there are lots of changes. The entire flavor of the school has changed, along with a lot of new buildings.  I started at SSU as a student in 1979, so we were both here at the same time.  I joined the staff a couple of years later, so I’ve been a programmer here for about twenty years.

Regarding electronic security

Question:

Also, so far as I know, "the banks" per se never "negotiated" with the IRS on this point–rather, they are making use of standard systems to make direct wire deposits to bank accounts that were already in place and in use. Given the requirements of the Right to Financial Privacy Act, I doubt it would be possible for the IRS and the banks to negotiate a workable cross check system that would prevent a direct deposit into the wrong account.

The electronic part of the form should have account name data, if different that the taxpayer name. An electronic refund should be made only when the number and name match. A status code can be created for when this causes a mailed refund.   Mike Block, Tax Fighting C.P.A.  World’s #1 QuickBooks Top Tester FREE NetLedger consult refer #10260   FREE 462p QB book/error codes/ 80 QB add-ons http://blocktax.com/

Response:

This is a real situation, somewhat embellished for illustrative purposes. Stipulated facts: The taxpayer claimed a $10,000 refund via direct deposit on a professionally prepared income tax return. When the refund failed to materialize, the taxpayer called the IRS and discovered that the refund had been paid.  Upon further investigation, it is discovered that an incorrect routing number was used on the return.  The decision to request a direct deposit had been a last minute item, and the routing number had been given to the preparer by the taxpayer over the phone. The IRS position is that it did as requested and has no more responsibility. The preparer claims to have used the number provided and disclaims any further responsibility. The taxpayer doesn’t know what bank the money went to, much less who got it. Who is liable? What should the taxpayer do next? I think I would feel some responsibility to my client, regardless of who made the error in the routing code.  A few simple telephone calls to the bank, the IRS, and the client should produce some results.  Claiming no responsibility sounds like a cop-out, to me.  Client satisfaction and good word of mouth advertising is what you need to grow your business. Barb, Thanks for the comment. While I certainly agree with you in concept, it is not necessarily that simple. While the IRS certainly could be of assistance, it could very well decline, and there is no paper trail in the traditional sense. Also, determining what bank received the money and making contact with a responsible officer would not necessarily be a simple task.  The bank could be anywhere.  It could certainly be anywhere in the US, and possibly anywhere in the world. Further, it would be highly unlikely that the bank would have the authority to remove the funds from an account without the approval of the owner of the account, who might very well refuse to cooperate. Even further, the legalities of this situation are far less clear than if we were dealing with paper checks.  If I get a tax refund check made out to you, endorse it and put it into my account I have probably committed an easily provable felony.  If your direct deposit arrives in my account and I do nothing I have committed – what??  Probably nothing. — Jim Hudspeth, CPA – http://home.att.net/~jdhcpa/mainpage.html – Washington, USA Associate Member, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners

The social consensus, and legal rules, that grew up around paper checks are a useful guide to what the IRS should do.  They should make reasonable efforts to find the erroneously credited account and recover the $10,000.  The machinery of law should grind in pursuit of the unjustly enriched recipient. However, if electronic payments (and other electronic commerce) are ever to reach their potential, they must be more reliable and foolproof to begin with.  The notion of relying on individuals to write down long bank routing numbers correctly is ridiculous. It almost sounds like it was designed to fail, keeping the status quo entrenchhed.   Doesn’t the IRS even check the name of the accountholder (or TIN) when delivering the payment to the bank? Anyway I’d suggest you forget about the paper check era. Lets cut to the end of this evolution, to a point where every citizen has a choice to maintain a single permanent bank account, maintained by the institution of his/her choice or by the US government for free, as an option.   This bank account would have an interface like a webledger and if you used it, all of your accounts receivable, payable, and inventory counts would start to be automatically maintained.  These accounts would have a single permanent ID.   You would get a *real* ID card (a smart card) and there would be no question, ever again, as to your dealings.  You could send and receive payments for free since the risks of fraud were driven much lower.  Note, when your bank account is bonded to you permanently for life, you’re not going to steal somebody’s credit card number and transfer the money into your permanent account!  It takes all the fun out of crime. Some people would actually like this arrangement, I certainly would:  http://www.gldialtone.com/trustedcontinent.htm because all goods and services will be 5 to 10% cheaper.   If there were any justice in the world, the government would impose an excise tax on all cash withdrawals and deposits at any bank or financial institition.  This would provide the revenue to pay for some of the crime and chaos incurred by society caused by physical cash, and would provide an important 1% incentive to move all transactions to electronic forms.  http://www.gldialtone.com/crime_solution.htm Todd * Todd F. What else would you suggest.  The commonly recommended procedure (which I use) is to get a copy of a check or deposit slip. Doesn’t the IRS even check the name of the accountholder (or TIN) when delivering the payment to the bank?

I am sure they don’t.  In fact, I doubt they could. Anyway I’d suggest you forget about the paper check era.

Some people would actually like this arrangement, I certainly would:  http://www.gldialtone.com/trustedcontinent.htm because all goods and services will be 5 to 10% cheaper.

No me.  I’d much rather pay the 5 or 10% (or 20% or 30%) than turn over that kind of power to a government.  Remember, reported crime went down under the Nazis. — Jim Hudspeth, CPA – http://home.att.net/~jdhcpa/mainpage.html – Washington, USA Associate Member, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners

Response:

Jim said, the IRS should … find the erroneously credited account and recover the $10,000. That very well may not be possible.

It is nearly certain the accountholder can be identified. It is nearly certain their TIN is known. There are multiple avenues the IRS could pursue including regarding it as an excess refund to that party and opening a standard tax collection action on the person.  You’re telling me, the IRS doesn’t have resources?  :-) The machinery of law should grind in pursuit of the unjustly enriched recipient. Agreed, but in what venue?

Oh come on. The notion of relying on individuals to write down long bank routing numbers correctly is ridiculous. What else would you suggest.  The commonly recommended procedure (which I use) is to get a copy of a check or deposit slip.

I don’t have any suggestion.  I am totally fed up with banks. I reject everything based on conventional bank accounts until they have better electronic interfaces, and become a better citizen on the internet and in the small businsss computing environment. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – where every citizen has a choice to maintain a single permanent bank account, maintained by the institution of choice or by the US government for free, as an option. Why don’t you trust the government?  This is not 1934.  Americans are not "good germans".  They’re an uncontrollable mob and armed to the teeth. What power would the government have if they had access to your bank account or could shut it down?  Everything you fear, the goverment already can do, with todays bank accounts. or more accurately, cannot because of the constraints imposed on the goverment. God help us if our liberty depended on the government not gaining access to our books of account.  Fortunately it doesn’t.  It depends on the will and the character of Americans. Which is still as fiercely independent as ever, last time I checked. If you are sincerely interested in investing the power to control our transactions back in the indvidual and small business then you should be reading the interesting developments in peer to peer systems, spread spectrum radio, and XML.  Together with the technologies for digital bearer cash, which have been established for some years now, these new P2P technologies and XML vocabularies provide the makings of a completely new fabric of local commerce beyond *any* means of monitoring.  In other words you would send and receive orders, invoices, payments etc. with your destination encrypted, in complete privacy, point-to-point, with no participation of any hub or central server or company whatsoever.  Just like physical cash–except that the parties themselves would have completely robust records of their dealings.   Is that what you want to happen?   This is what I am hoping will happen, to the extent it turns out to be legal to do them.  As far as I know, it will be perfectly legal. I’m just asking, because you raised that point about not trusting the government, * Todd F. Boyle CPA    http://www.GLDialtone.com/ * XML accounting, webledgers, BSPs, ASPs, whatever it takes

Response:

Also, so far as I know, "the banks" per se never "negotiated" with the IRS on this point–rather, they are making use of standard systems to make direct wire deposits to bank accounts that were already in place and in use.

Given the requirements of the Right to Financial Privacy Act, I doubt it would be possible for the IRS and the banks to negotiate a workable cross check system that would prevent a direct deposit into the wrong account. Further, I would not support the type of legislation that would be required to make it possible.  I’m more concerned about privacy and limited government than I am about software functionality. — Jim Hudspeth, CPA – http://home.att.net/~jdhcpa/mainpage.html – Washington, USA Associate Member, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners

We had a comparable experience when we used a nearby CPA for electronic filing. The refund did not apply initially because=20 there was a prior return with a balance and a prior unfiled return. By the time that was resolved, the taxpayer and the CPA moved and the CPA closed his electronic refund account.=20 I never found out what happened to the balance of the refund, but these are more reasons to really question excessively=20 time consuming and error prone electronic filing procedures. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Actually, I fall more in line with your theory than Todd’s–this didn’t require a "smoke filled room" deal, but rather just the simple fact that nobody really *worried* about what happens in this case.  As you note, for misdirected physical checks, you have the issue of the endorsement.  But when the system is on autopilot, one human error (even intentional error, as in the FSA you cite later) is enough to create major problems. One of the reasons why paper systems are so "inefficient" when looked at by technology types is due to the safeguards inherent in them. Conversely, when the technology gurus go to design their systems, knowing that efficiency is a key selling point, they quite often don’t adequately brainstorm on the question of what can go wrong. Ed, I was hoping you would comment on this one. I completely agree with your above commentary.  I see no "demons" here – just a very difficult problem resulting from conflicting concerns and laws. As an example, we sometimes forget that  banks have an obligation to protect the privacy of their customers pursuant to the Right to Financia= l Privacy Act, 12 U.S.C. =A7 3401 et seq.  It is therefore unlikely that attempts to secure identifying information with respect to the bank’s customers will be voluntarily forthcoming. I posted this same problem on misc taxes moderated.  The responses there are more numerous and much more knowledgeable.  Interesting.

The Pentaflex and Pentaflex SL are the same as the Practica Nova, c.1965. To quote Ivor Matanle in Collecting and using Classic SLR’s: "(The Nova) was a case of the VEB company designing down to a cost…and as usually happens when accountants take charge, the product was a failure in engineering terms, although commercially successful in terms of numbers sold. It is not a camera to buy if you plan to use it". My own very limited experience with the Nova matched Matanle’s evaluation quite accurately. Best regards and good luck. Ed M.

how to account for NEW Biz stuff?

Question:

Actually, the IRS website (www.irs.gov) has good information about setting up a new business. Here’s a few easy tips that may or may not be common sense: 1)  Keep and organize receipts for EVERYTHING relating to the business.  All business related purchases should be paid for by check or credit card if at all possible.  Same goes for income.  She’ll probably be dealing with a lot of cash.  She needs to have a receipt book with copies so that all income is recorded.  And yes, she will need to pay sales tax to the state and make deposits on a regular basis. 2)  If you are going to be driving the RV to crafts shows etc. be sure and keep track of your mileage AND your receipts for fuel etc.  At the end of the year, you will take your deduction based on which one is bigger (for an RV it will probably be the fuel). 3)  The materials (paper, etc.) are expenses.  The RV is an asset and must be depreciated over a period of time, no less than 3 years. 4)  All of these deductions and depreciation can only be taken to the extent of her businesses income.  In other words, if she comes out with a net loss the first year or two (not unusual for a new business) she will only be able to net out tax wise at zero.  Any deductions she can’t take can be carried over to the next year. 5)  She will have to turn a taxable profit within 5 years (at least that’s what it used to be) or this venture could all be designated a "hobby" by the IRS. Good luck, Paula

And as yet has had no contracts or income from this business.  She is doing a small show in a few weeks. I am not too sure what kind of sales to expect. It is a business related to Paper Arts such as Card Design, Decorative Boxes and Contract Calligraphy. She has been buying supplies and tools (for a couple of years).  In addition, we obtained a 30-foot travel trailer to use as a studio.  We got it at a modest price (it was "a little rough") and since spent about a total of $3000 +/- fixing it up. We have plenty of room for RV parking at our house, so rent to park will not be an issue.  This will become a permanently parked, mobile home/office/studio and used exclusively as a studio.  With no cost except power after the upgrades are complete. A couple of questions please. How to we account for the cost of the studio construction?  One time or a short depreciation or? And as far as the supplies, tools and seminars (training)?  How do we account for them?  After all, the supplies are consumables like paper and ink and such? I am a new user to these groups also, and am not sure if sometimes us "newbie’s" are answered. Anyway, first I would like ask a few "starting" questions. Have you set up the company with a business license? Tax ID#, with the state etc? Are you considered a joint venture, partnership, corporation, etc.? Vernon is correct in that you should seek an accountant, however, if you choose to try it on your own at first or can’t afford the cost at the moment, you can do it on your own.  It just takes patience and caution. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

I think the key word is self-respecting.  I don’t think a self-respecting woman would (unless there was a divorce already under way, maybe). Geri ~~~~~~~~~~ "I only talk seriously on the first Tuesday in every month, from 4PM to 7PM." ~~~~~~~~~~ To e-mail us, dump the litterbox. :-)

I think it’s often a case of salesmanship.  No self-respecting woman will get involved with a lying dog, that’s true, but it’s harder to turn down a tortured Byronic soul who, out of the goodness of his heart, is staying with a pathological/pathetic (pick one) woman whose needs are so great that he simply can’t abandon her because she’d probably come after him with a gun/commit suicide (pick one).  Also, he couldn’t leave his kids with such a nutcase/ravaged soul (pick one), nor could he take them away from her.  He has a long list of grievances/sad indicators that this is a true accounting of the situation, but he is nobly and with great strength of character forging foward, honoring his committments, even though his life lies in ashes and there is no glimmer of a spark of joy to light his way.  If only (if he’s really good, he’s squeezing out a manly tear or two now), if only he’d met *you* earlier!  You understand him as no woman has before!  You are the only woman ever in the history of the universe who could fill the black hole in his heart and make him complete!  If only…. if only….  (Now he’s posing in front of a dark window, preferably with a anonymous cityscape beyond him, allowing the light to dimly illuminate his brooding features, as he ponders that happiness that could have, should have been his and yours, if only….)  But wait!  *You* have the power to lighten his load!  You are brimming over with love and nurturance!  It’s not his fault that he’s caught in this awful situation!  It’s the bitch/sad wreck (pick one) of a wife that is forcing him, noble and self-sacrificing soul that he is, into this terrible blasted landscape, his hopes and dreams lying in twisted, blackened shards at his feet!  But you can provide some solace, some peace to an anguished soul!  You and he have a REAL connection, a deep one unlike anything that any two people have felt before ever in the history of love!  The fires of your love will ne’er be quenched by the cold waters of disillusionment and doubt, because they have been kindled by God himself. Two years later, as you spend yet another holiday by yourself, wondering if he’ll be able to get away to make a phone call or if he’ll forget the way he did on your birthday, you might admit to a niggling doubt or two.  But by then, you’ve got two years and a growing crop of resentment invested. In the meantime, you saw his wife the other day at Wal-Mart and you could swear that she’s pregnant, but that can’t be because he swore that he doesn’t sleep with her anymore, that they have separate rooms, but he’s slowly wearing he down to agreeing to the divorce, but he can’t hurry things because she’d take the kids away from him. No, I’ve never gone through exactly that, not with a married man, but close enough.  Self-deception is so awfully easy when the other person validates your own secret view of yourself. Very good advice from Tamara!  To the original poster, if you would like to see what this man really feels for you, tell him you will no longer see him until he is divorced.   You have to have the strength of will to follow through with this, no matter how hard it hurts.  I think most of the time when someone says he is going to leave a relationship, and doesn’t because of a variety of excuses, he probably isn’t going to. Ditto Merrie. I agree that this sounds like this is one MORE excuse not to leave. IMHO – it’s time to tell him that: 1)  You will NOT see him again until he is divorced 2)  You WILL start seeing other people who have the time and ability to make a commitment to you 3)  He need to decide where he wants to be. His Son’s girlfriend getting pregnant is NOT an excuse to stay with a wife he doesn’t want to be with – it’s not a true family emergency in my book.  Thus – he does not want to leave his wife – and you should start looking for a man who can put you in the position you DESERVE – that of partner- fiancee- wife. I always had this philosophy — If he cheats on his wife, what makes you think it’ll be any different with you?

Response:

And a wise philosophy that is, my dear.  I agree with it 100% now, but back then, you couldn’t have convinced me that he would be anything less than a true blue, more faithful than my dog husband and companion to me.  Our relationship would be different, it would be better because  (are you ready for this?)  I UNDERSTOOD HIM LIKE NO BODY ELSE…. I KNEW HIM BETTER blah, blah, blah….  Nothing and no one on this earth could have convinced me otherwise.  Oh, what 11 years of hindsight will do for a girl, huh? DH wasn’t perfect in his last marriage either… he was an alcoholic and he cheated on his wife as well…. however, I think he learned a big lesson when she took the kids and left him and the new love said, I just want to be friends….. he totally turned himself around before I ever came on the scene.  So did I… I learned the hard way that an affair doesn’t satisfy anything but your most basic primitive desires…. there’s not commitment, no real love, it’s all living for the moment. By the time DH and I ran into each other, we were ready for a committed relationship – to each other and we knew we never wanted to experience the pain that an affair could bring to ourselves or to each other. The original poster sounds like a very young thing (young is now 20+ in my book) and I think she’s way too young to waste her life waiting for something that will never happen.  And even if it did, I go back to your philosophy Cindy, if he cheats on his wife now, what makes you think he won’t cheat on you. Stepping off my box now…. ooh, this is a hot button topic for me…… R.

Thank you – you have my permission to educate as many women out there as you think it’ll reach.  It’s a true story…. it was always something.. the oldest boy was in trouble with the law… got a girl pregnant.. the timing just wasn’t right… wait a while… It was a hard but valuable lesson…. married men that cheat aren’t worth having…. at least not the ones that I knew then and very few of the ones I know now.    Find yourself a man without a wife…. it’s hard enough making a relationship work with someone who has an ex… but there’s something even stickier about the present and current Mrs. So and So. With 6 million people on the planet, 1/2 being men, why do you need one who is obviously still linked to people that do not include you?  Is this guy Robert Redford/Brad Pitt/Donald Trump/Bill Gates/Tom Cruise/Michael Jordan/Elvis Presley/ (you get the picture) all rolled into one?  Even a man who has totally split with his wife still will always have the emotional tie with kids that will prevent you from getting 100% of his attention.  In the beginning, it seems mature to be able to share, but believe me (from experience), eventually those kids and especiallly the ex-wife, will take time and resources when you are in need.  You will NOT come first at a time when you need it.  I was pissed when people tried to warn me before I jumped into a relationship with a man who had 2 ex wives and 4 kids!  I thought my case would be different.  Now I have a son with this man and I have selfishly tied my son to 6 people I would never never choose to be associated with.  This may sound harsh, but from a primal standpoint, I don’t want my child to have any emotional and financial competition from children that are not my biological material and yet I knowingly did just that.  Some days it is hard for me to rise above my animal nature, but every single day I must.  I try to spend my days happy and do the best I can for my son.   Think, girl, think.  And I do wish you happiness whatever you choose.

Jen – I mean this with all sincerity…. but perhaps some humor will help. Hum this to "The Beverly Hillbillies" Come listen to my story about a man named Don… a friendly kinda guy for whom I couldn’t keep my pants on.. Then one day my divorce came through and out from his mouth came a bubbling fool Denial, that is, "the time’s not right"  "Wait a little longer" Well, the next thing you know old Don’s a dad to be, little Alex would make five in his little family tree. Said that I was unfaithful, the kid wasn’t his. And all I could say, if it’s not – then who’s? Left me.  Paternity suit…. child support. Broken heart. Now, the moral of my story, and it’s got one, ya know, Is when the feller says "wait" it’s time to go.. get your heart of neutral and put it into overdrive Don’t look back and you’ll come out alive Emotionally, that is, but it’ll hurt He’s not a leaver… and if it’s not one thing – It’s his mother.

You probably don’t want to be hearing this right now and it *isn’t* meant as a guilt trip.  Also, probably not so relevant given the age of the ‘kids’ involved.  Still – I’ve been the kid (much younger) in this kind of relationship polygon.  Believe me, the fall-out isn’t any fun from that perspective, either.  It’s a special brand of parental selfishness – one that shouldn’t be encouraged.  I agree with the other posters – this is a no-win situation for everyone involved except for the marital cheat. And what does his son having a pregnant girlfriend have to do with your relationship? > Has anyone else here gotten involved with before the person was out of > the marriage and why do things like this stop him from leaving?  Am I > being selfish or sane?

You are being neither selfish or sane.  Honey, trust me on this, he is not leaving his wife now or in the future.  If he really loved you, he would have done so years ago.  At 22, his son should be graduated from college not just beginning college.  He has put you last because he already has a family that has to come first.  You are never going to be first in his life.  If you aren’t now, when do you think you will be?  There will always be excuses.  He will always have a reason why he can’t leave now. He is the selfish one and you keep enabling the activity. KICK HIM OUT NOW!!!! Louise

Response:

Wow, sounds like you have been living in limbo for quite a while.  Are you sure this is the kind of relationship you want?  I mean, wouldn’t it be nice if he loved you enough to put you first and have the strength to deal with anything that may come up with you by his side? I don’t have any experiance with this kind of relationship but I do know about relationships were you aren’t valued.  It sounds like you could be waiting a lifetime while life happens for this guy. This may sound harsh but I would kick him to the curb and find a man where you can be his one and only.  He isn’t being fair to you or his wife.  I think you know this already.  What are you waiting for? I believe that the idea of exchanging Zipfiles offers the most reliable and secure solution for the next few years.  However, it requires too much futzing with utilities to succeed for 90% of the small business market. Some fairly ordinary, low-technology software could help make this possible.  Here is an example of how it might work: http://www.gldialtone.com/accsvcPT.htm http://www.gldialtone.com/accsvcQB.htm I’ve posted these theoretical ideas before and gotten real positive feedback, but too lazy to write the software. I just upgraded to PC Anywhere 8.0 and stumbled across Speedsend which purports to examine files and only send DATA that has changed instead of the old method of just comparing dates and sending FILES that have changed….

pcAnywhere to send large amounts of data in this way.  One tricky bit is the use of "Synchronise files", which is potentially disastrous if you’re not clear what you are doing.  "Speedsend" is a great attribute, which will work regardless of whether you are synchronising or doing a one-way file transfer.  Irrespective of what Speedsend does, when you synchronise you are overwriting older files with more recent ones, in both directions.  You can easily lose data this way, or corrupt apps that depend on certain files being coordinated in particular ways on the one machine. If you restrict PCA to one-way file transfer you can exercise much closer control over what is being transferred.  PCA has options (under File | Application Options | File Transfer | Protocol | pcAnywhere | Settings) to choose whether to overwrite older files only, all files, etc. Over 2 years, sending about 5 MB files per day (a database of scanned medical records) via PCA, we’ve never had any observed data loss. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I just upgraded to PC Anywhere 8.0 and stumbled across Speedsend which purports to examine files and only send DATA that has changed instead of the old method of just comparing dates and sending FILES that have changed.  As a test I entered a bill at the remote site then synchronised the files using Speedsend and lo and behold the bill I entered appeared at the prime site with a transfer time of only 2 minutes rather than the hour long process I was used to.  I then paid the bill at the prime site and re- synchronised to the remote site (again a very quick transfer) and yes the payment was there. I know this is not true networking but it appears a wonderful way to use data entry at two sites with regular synchronisation. My concern is that I may be missing something re data corruption and wondered if anyone else had any experience with this process and QB or any other program.  ( Note I have also tested this with a doctors database of patients using Clipper and seemed to have similar good results)

I wouldn’t trust this method at all.  Yes, at first glance it appears that it works but there could be all kinds of wierd things happen. For example.  Try adding an invoice at the remote location and add an invoice at the primary location.  Then try the synchronization.  Make sure you run an integrity check too. Quite honestly this method scares me.  I’ve been a programmer for twenty years and have seen all kinds of data corruption.  And that’s without trying anything "interesting" such as you’re doing.  <smile One possibility might be to Zip the file first before sending. Steve,     Yes, it works (most of the time). I have found that careful testing is necessary and what works in one area of a database may not work in another. (We won’t reindex again any time soon).     Remember, backups are nice. Luck,  Dana To reply, please remove NOSPAM from the address Visit our web site at http://www.tailored-computing.com

I have been experimenting with PC Anywhere for file transfers and stumbled across something that appears so useful, I am concerned there must be a downside. Basically I have a client with two sites, 20 miles apart.  The networked version of QB is not available in Australia yet.  What I have been doing till today is using PC Anywhere (version 2) to copy the QBW file to the remote site each day so they could use it for interrogation and follow up of debtors balances etc.  However I have warned them never to enter data at the remote site as it would be wiped by the next days download.  I just upgraded to PC Anywhere 8.0 and stumbled across Speedsend which purports to examine files and only send DATA that has changed instead of the old method of just comparing dates and sending FILES that have changed. ( Note I have also tested this with a doctors database of patients using Clipper and seemed to have similar good results) —Share what you know.
