9/22/05: Today`s question is being brought to you by one of our very own anon posters :) Can you remember the names of your school teachers?  The ones you liked?  The ones you disliked?

Accounting Career Insight

Question:

Hi- I was hoping some folks could give me a little insight into an accounting career. Basically, I’m trying to get an idea of: -peoples experiences in their career(good or bad) -opinions on whether this is/isn’t a good career choice -is the accounting education relevant to the workplace? -any other helpful information about a career as an accountant Right now I am a Master’s of Accounting student. Over this past summer I had tried a Financial Accounting course and found that I really liked it and I decided to pursue the degree. Right now I am enrolled in Managerial Accounting and find it equally interesting. My problem is that I have just been laid off from my job and therefore after this semester I will have to pay the tuition bills on my own. So now I feel more pressure to make sure this is the right decision. I would VERY much appreciate any insight that those in the profession could give. Also, I would love any ideas on how I could make transition into accounting as my next job. The job I was laid off from was for a financial company working in systems analysis. I’d like to just jump into an accounting position or company rather than take another systems job and wait for school to finish to get into accounting. Thanks.

Response:

I’ve been working in auditing and accounting for a lot of years.  I worked as a low-level accountant for a Utility company for a couple of months, then went into the Air Force (to avoid being drafted into the Army) and was assigned to work for the Auditor General since I had an accounting degree. After I got out I worked briefly for a CPA firm, then went back to work as a civilian auditor for the USAF Auditor General.  Then, for a while, I operated a bookkeeping service (didn’t have my CPA certificate yet), the worked as an auditor for the State Comptroller auditing sales tax, property tax, franchise tax, oil and gas tax and a few other minor taxes.  I got tired of travelling so much, so I became an auditor for and oil and gas company.  About that time I got my CPA certificate.  I eventually took early retirement and began working as a self-employed CPA. Outside of education and experience in accounting and auditing, the best thing I ever did was to join the Toastmasters club.  When you have a job that doesn’t involve a lot of public speaking, Toastmasters really prepares you for the occasional times when you do have to make a presentation to a group.

I don’t know of any courses dovoted specifically to this, but depletion accounting is a topic covered in any intermediate accounting sequence. Check with your nearby colleges/universities to see if they offer any distance learning accounting courses. — Todd Stephens

The Petroleum Accountants’ Society has some good publications.   Call the accounting dept of any oil company (or their auditing dept) and they can tell you.  The organization is refered to as COPAS.  I forget what the CO stands for.

Put me on record as opposed to both of these methods unless they are provided free by the banks (which of course they aren’t for most small businesses.) Web based payment methods are emerging which are cost free. You’re absolutely right, it’s nice to have customers who pay their bills.  And for some customers the preauthorised payments are the perfect service.  My own view is that businesses should simply stop extending credit to those people until they reach a minimum threshhold of capacity to conduct their affairs in a free economy without a parent or guardian taking care of them. The existence of large numbers of these dumbshits creates a criminal class (banks and governments) that exploit them, perpetuating the problem. Response:

Stop invoicing, your business clients and their customers will thank you! The Small Business Administration estimates that it costs $4.17 to send out a standard invoice.  Then there’s the cost of waiting for the payment to return in the mail and the cost of following up with 2nd and 3rd invoices. Large businesses learned decades ago that setting up customers on automated payment plans makes sense.  It improves their receivables rate, reduces their overhead, and improves customer retention as the customer doesn’t stop to reevaluate his relationship with the business every month at bill paying time. Now medium and small businesses can experience the same positive results. There are two basic options for setting up customers on automatic payment. 1.  Paper bank drafting — This option has been available to big businesses (businesses with over $500,000 in receivables per month) for over 40 years.  Today it is available to businesses of any size.  The customer fills out a one page application and sends this and a voided check to the business.  Subsequently each month on the due date a preauthorized paper check is printed for the customer and delivered to the business for deposit. 2.  Electronic funds transfer — This option is newer and is available to all business sizes.  The customer fills out the same kind of application as with option 1 and then each month on the due date, the business uploads a simple flat file to the Automated Clearing House system that results in electronic funds transfer from the customers’ bank accounts to the business’ bank account within 48 hours. In both options the business is paid on time every time and the customer no longer has to take the time to write and mail a payment out to the business. Both options cost less and take less time than invoicing or lock box setup.  Option 2 includes on-line real-time reporting. With recent developments in legislation and technology, both options are available to any business regardless of size or monthly sales volume. If you’d like a free evaluation of how much time and money a business would save through converting to automated payments, please e-mail your request to me. CPA licensing requirements

Question:

My question: what are they looking for regarding moral character? Conduct within the accounting environment?

Requirements and procedures no doubt vary from state to state – so you should contact your state’s board of accountancy to get the straight scoop. My guess is that a prior conviction involving fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, etc. would be far more of a problem than a conviction for draft evasion, drunk driving, manslaughter, etc. MTW   -Michael T. If a person has a felony record from his/her youth (not juvenile) will this automatically disqualify an individual from acquiring a CPA license? Microsofts' manual acctg system

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – There was an article in yesterdays paper about  economist testifying that Microsoft had a manual (paper, non electronic)  accounting system. What paper?   I suspect this is a hoax. They use exchange server and SMTP for accounting system… This was an AP story carried in the Fort Worth Start Telegram with the heading of "Gates conflicts with testimony". The economist (Richard Schmalense) told a Federal judge that "the company’s accounting records were kept by hand on sheets of paper". MS spokesman Mark Murray said "how you assign profits is not something  that we have in digital form". I suspect that the general ledger may of fact be manual while the sub-systems would obviously have to be automated. I saw such a system many years ago at large  company that had over 30,000 employees. Some of their subsystem reports were so large they were printed directly to microfiche instead of paper but the GL was manual.

I don’t find this the least bit odd. I can’t imagine some of the senior accountants I served under as a junior using anything other than a pen and paper, or tolerating journal entries that were "not in good order" (all the debits leading, with credits following). Also, the firm I started with kept a few manual bookkeeping accounts that they assigned to incoming juniors for training purposes.  In my opinion, that is still not a bad idea. Jim Hudspeth, CPA

Question:

Considering the durability of their handiwork, I’d say the "older" women in the amp wiring dept. were BEAUTIFUL! A.T. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – You tease us. Tell us more! What did you do at Fender? Who was most fun at the Xmas party? Stuff like that… Dan, Nothing much to tell – I worked with Harold Rhodes on the Rhodes piano. Since I played guitar, I would walk across the tracks and eat lunch with Freddie. I did get into a slight argument with Leo when he suggested using an 8" speaker as the main sound speaker in the Rhodes’ speaker cabinet. I didn’t let anybody know that I had worked at JBL, and had, in fact, designed the JBL’s they were using in their Showman amps and the Twin. The guy who could probably shed more light on the whole Fender era is Dick Stout, who is probably still living in Orange County. He ran the amp division, under Forrest White, and he was there a lot longer than I was. As far as good looking women there, I didn’t see many. The guitar manufacturing was all guys, only the amplifier wiring department had some women, and most were older women. I didn’t get over to sales much, so I can’t comment about the women there. JBL had some gorgeous women working in all departments, so I’m a little spoiled, I guess. Harvey Gerst Indian Trail Recording Studio http://www.ITRstudio.com/

We’ll never know about freindship, but the question of which man was more vital to Fender’s success is one that might be asked. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – BOth of them have books. Which one is more reliable? We may never know, but I can’t imagine them working together for so many years if things were actually as bad as Forrest describes. During my days at Fender, Forrest White was mainly in charge of the amplifier section (Quonset hut #5, I think ?) and George was in charge of the guitar section (Quonset hut #1, I think ?). Leo would wander around all the buildings but I saw Leo mostly in Freddie’s R&D building (Quonset hut #3, I think ?) or over in the offices at Fender Sales (which Don Randall ran) across the street. Leo would occasionally visit us (Harold Rhodes and me), but we were in a little building behind the other buildings, separated by railroad tracks. During lunch, I would usually hang out with Freddie. Dan, Nothing much to tell – I worked with Harold Rhodes on the Rhodes piano.

Who was Leo Fender’s better and more important friend: George Fullerton or Forrest White? These 2 guys have 2 different versions of the story about Fender, both claim to be more influencing, important and closer friends of Leo, both were Vice Presidents in Fender, and they seem not to like each other, So what is the truth? BOth of them have books. Which one is more reliable?

I haven’t read George Fullerton’s book.  Do you have any more details please (title, publisher, date of publishing). — Jeff Mead

Which one is more reliable? Probably the person who could clarify the Fender hierarchy situation is Freddie Tavares, but unfortunately he died several years ago. tim gueguen 101867

We may never know, but I can’t imagine them working together for so many years if things were actually as bad as Forrest describes. My impression after reading White’s book is that he became somewhat bitter over the circumstances at Musicman & also at his being left-out of G&L. Leo’s 2nd marriage probably played a part as well. One thing I’ve never figured out is who ran the support departments like accounting, HR, etc. Seems like that would fall under the General Manager, yet Forrest never mentions it.
