Gasoline
Question:
Marine diesel is running around $2.95 a gallon these days.
Yeah, but you know the military always pays too much for basic items like wrenches and toilet seats, too…

I was discussing filling up my boats 2 300 gal. tanks. Fortunately, I overhauled both diesels this winter and have them purring like new. They are working at their best efficiency in years.

I thought that was to pay for stuff that it doesn’t want us to know about maybe it’s stupidity. Like the hospital jacks up the price of an asperin to pay for people who cannot pay their medical bills. Have you ever thought about the fact that the government might be doing things the tax payers wouldn’t like and are jacking up the accounting of prices they give us for things they buy. I believe anyone who was tempted to lie would do it. I think anyone with the opportunity to skim off the top would skim. I can’t conceive of your average person who had a gun not taking advantage of it. I’m not anymore dishonest than most. I have a feeling we are being fleeced. Besides they might need the resources to set up an enemy and launch a surprise attack on terrorists or something they don’t want everyone to know about like a secret weapon. If the general public knew about it or its funding then it wouldn’t be a secret. If we find out then someone they don’t want to know can find out. They’d rather the enemy not know it was coming because any hardware can be countered once the other side knows about it or knows its weaknesses. So it may be stupidity or it could be an attempt to hide what they are about ever thought of that? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was discussing filling up my boats 2 300 gal. tanks. I just paid $1.649 in Livermore. Pays to shop around–gas at the fuel docks, for boats, was at $2.65 today! Joe Parsons

So did you motor or sail the boat to the Livermore gas station to get the much less expensive gas? Nancy Unique, like everyone else

Okay, here’s another question: Do you think Ron Jeremy has ADD? I’m that way as well with a lot of the things I enjoy doing. With the things I enjoy the absolute most though, I can easily hyperfocus and it can be almost impossible to distract me. I wonder if there are major differences in hyperfocus among people with ADD. For example, I wonder if some people can’t, what differing levels people have, how long it can last, etc. I think I’ll have to post a question to the group about that. Anyway, this thread had more to do with R_D than with actors.

Don’t discount Mike Myers just because he can do all those takes. He may just be hyperfocusing on something he likes. For some people, repetitive work is like a cure. Let’s be realistic here. We know very little about how he is off camera, or away from work. The only possible answer is "insufficient data". — / Marc Etienne Lachance, KSC, LMAA /< Danubist, Ateist, and, well, /____ *you* figure it out. Fnord.

I was a music major in undergraduate school. I could go into a practice room and pound out scales in octives on a piano over and over. I could shut the door and vocalize my brains out. I was working to my strengths. I had tremendous diligence when it came to practicing, but very little staying power in some other areas. Actors don’t have to do the same take over EXACTLY THE SAME WAY each time. One reason to do it over is to try it differently. It’s part of the creative process. Also, when we’re doing something we truly love (and are truly good at) we can sometimes do the boring stuff to get to the good stuff.

In accounting there are days when all I want to do is ten-key. Very repetitious. I tend to over-analysis, so shutting down is restful and repetition is restful. Last year, I made & sold 700 paper-mache Christmas ornaments. The design was the fun part, but hand making 700 is boring. I used hyper-focussed for about 3 weeks. I think it is an error to underestimate the power of an ADDer hyper-focussing. Charlie Iachance said: "Don’t discount Mike Myers just because he can do all those takes. Actually my original answer was to the dear departed R_D, so I might not have been completely objective. Hence the "real life" remark. Even with 36 "completely different" takes, an actor still has to hit his/her marks, stay within the lighting parameters, and not intrude on the space or light parameters of anyone else in the scene. And if you’re shooting reversals or close-ups, the actor has to match the master shot. ALso, I can think of lots of things I enjoy doing, but I still can’t give my complete attention to without being wildly distracted, unless I can hyperfocus which I’m not able to switch on and off at will. Anyway, this thread had more to do with R_D than with actors. Kate Coe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It’s very common to attribute various actors and entertainers with ADD. But, in reality, most ADD’ers have trouble sustaining anything– a state of mind, an action, an emotion for very long. And so to do the same thing, in pretty much the same way, over and over again, say, for 36 takes, is very hard. Yes AND no. This statement is true when referring to things which ADD’ers don’t enjoy doing. On the other hand, when an ADD’er is doing something that he or she enjoys and has the ability to hyperfocus on it, they can sustain that activity for a lengthy period of time. In film school I acted in several films. I was the lead in two of them. Despite having numerous takes done on several shots my mind kept focused through each one of them. I was able to do that because I enjoy acting. I mentioned in one of my first posts about how it is not uncommon for me to edit (film) for 16 hours straight with my attention focused like a laser the whole time because I enjoy editing and can hyperfocus on it. I once saw a Dustin Hoffman interview on TV where he talked about having ADD. He talked of how his parents pushed him into playing the piano and how he never excelled at it because he couldn’t concentrate on studying. He then spoke of how he discovered his love for acting and how he was able to dedicate his focus to it. BTW – Mike Myers does a lot of improvising so if he does 36 takes on a shot chances are most of them are completely different. Let’s not confuse film with real life. Or posting with real life. If you re-read the original post you will see that my question was formed from an article/interview about Mike Myers, not from film. – Mike Rick, "Pumpkin" Troll Operations: Where did you hear that Mike Myers is not ADD? Mike’s question was speculative and my answers are speculation. I didn’t say I heard anything rather I used my brain to speculate. It is ok to use the brain? Or does that come under Troll Operations? No, The airport without controller is just a cool thing he heard. Some people actually like to give the impression they have ADD. Why do you feel that folks would WANT to appear to have ADD? I NEED A NEW ACCOUNTING SYSTEM
Question:
Daniel, Thank you for your reply. We are currently using the latest version of Sage. Unfortunately the product does not achieve the functionality I was led to believe it would have. We have only had the product for six months and due to structure changes within the group our accounting requirements have changed substantially. Sage seems to be a good product, but is really suited to smaller businesses rather than our own. Support has also been less than desirable, we need a product that can be easily supportable and has a true support infrastructure in place. I have had a couple of emails directly referring to CAIMAN 5.0, Accpac for Windows and Dynamics CS+. MAS90 has also been suggested, however this is part of the Sage group. I believe we had about 115 employees when the company I worked for finally agreed to institute a 401(k) plan. We used a pension administrator and an insurance agent (who brought in Aetna), and it was great. It takes close accounting work if you have old payroll software, but if you use a spreadsheet faithfully, it works out fine. The costs to the company are minimal – about $800 – $1,000 per year if you have the account fees charged to their individual accounts. To encourage the factory workers (who started at about $5.25 per hour) to participate, we matched dollar for dollar for the first $250.00, and $.25 on the dollar for the next thousand dollars. We allowed as little as $2.00 per week or 1% (their choice) of their salary to be contributed, just to get them involved. Just remember, the plan you file is the plan that MUST be followed by ALL. The management CANNOT promise to bring a new employee in early, just to get them to take a position. I think the initial setup costs were $2,000. It all fell in line with the usual profit-sharing bonus (1% of the pre-tax profit) we handed out quarterly, and cost us less. The employees ended up with more since the match is not taxed. Go for it! You will be doing your employees a HUGE favor! — Cary Hedrick, Accountant "You may soar with eagles, but weasles don’t get caught in jet engines." (

Question:
In addition there is an inventory update feature, which you can use to adjust the quanities on hand. So you don’t have to do it by GJ entry.
Response:
Help! I am attempting to set up Peachtree Accounting for Windows for a produce delivery company. Here is my problem: Many of the items that this company sells are sold in three different ways – i.e., by the case, by the pound, and by the each. The problem is, I can’t seem to find a way to set up these items in inventory so that they are linked to one another. The only solution I was able to come up with was to create three different inventory items, 111CS, 111LB, and 111EA, and then manually deduct from the case amount at certain predetermined intervals. Is this the only way to accomplish this in Peachtree, or is there an easier way? Thank you much, Brian H.
Response:
Brian, Without getting too detailed, how about…. – Make the inventory item, the smallest common denominator (probably each unless they weight more than a pound – you could set the item up as a ) – Create Assemblies for each of the "Quantified" items. i.e.. The case assembly BOM is 10 units, etc. Then, sell the item, or one of the assemblies. — Paul MacFarlane American Riviera Software http://www.business-plaza.com http://www.sb.net/amerisft/ remove *SPAMLESS* from reply address – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Help! Reinstalling Quickbooks program and data after crash
Question:
One of my clients managed to mess up their hard drive such that their QuickBooks 4.0 installation was scrambled beyond repair, and I have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the program. They have the original setup floppies, and (luckily) a backup floppy copy of the .QBW file that contains their transaction data to date. My question is, if I reinstall the program, and then paste in the .QBW file (via Windows Explorer), will the program recognise the data in that file? That is, if all the .QBW data are just the actual transactions, how are things like the customer and vendor lists to which the transactions point to be restored? Does I have to manually recreate the various support files (account, customer, vendor, item, etc.) before the .QBW data can be read? Are these files stored such that, if they weren’t damaged on the hard drive, I can try to back them up to floppies and paste them in as well before pasting in the transaction data? If so, how would I identify these files? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s had to recover a crashed QB installation with existing data, so any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Response:
The backup file contains all the list information you need. After reinstalling QB, open the QBW file (should be QBB, in that case restore the file) and then save to the hard drive. All is explained in the manual. Everything you need is in the QBW file. The only exception may be a custom invoice template, but you can create it later with no problem. How much does A/P Managers ?
Question:
At my last review I only received a 2% raise. I was told that I am near what the maximum was for my position. The maximum being $660 per week for the State of California. Apparently, my company became a member of an association of 500 Californian business. It gives statistical breakdowns of what other business do and averages on salaries based on positions. Frankly, I think they are giving me the business. Are they? How much can an A/P Manager make? p.s. I have a certificate in accounting. I am studying at night for my BA and thus my CPA. It’s funny. In Atlanta, you can get a CPA to do your job for that much. Where you are and how big your company is are key items in determining your worth TO THEM. I agree with Jim. Check your market value elsewhere. If you can get more elsewhere and it looks appealling, go for it. Truly, an open market will determine value. Good luck, Dana

Statistics are just statistics and should not be used as a ceiling for salaries. A sample size of 500 is way too low to be statistically relevent anyways. Many variables are involved in deciding pay, such as size of company, how long one has been with the company, education, specific duties/responsibilites, etc. There is also the issue of other forms of compensation such as company car, performance bonuses, profit sharing, stock options, etc. that many Managers may receive but that may not have been included as part of "salaries" in the statistical analysis. Remember, statistics, when viewed the "right way", can be made to explain almost anything. There is no such thing as a "maximum" salary unless it’s due to an internal pay scale, such as if you were in a union. The only way to really find out your value as an A/P Manager is to start networking and sending out resumes and test the market yourself. I have a certificate in accounting. I am studying at night for my BA and thus my CPA. However, I still feel that I am getting the business.
IMHO, while it’s great you’re studying for your BA and CPA, you do not have these as yet. Therefore, your pay will not be materially affected by your efforts until you actually receive your degree and designation.

In Canada (B.C., actually) I think the price is around C$8,000-10,000. Of course you have to add at least another $1,000 for a cage, and probably another $1,000 for accessories and food. Their diet is somewhat specialized from what I understand. The bottom line is, you are looking at the equivelent of the down payment on a small house. —
