Hi fuzzy, Welcome to the group. I can’t find your before/after pics…
I see you’re trying to stop smoking; I don’t know if you’ve tried reading /The Easy Way To Stop Smoking/, by Allen Carr? I read that book 10+ years ago, and it really helped! I quit the next day, and haven’t smoked a cigarette since. (His diet book sucks, though.) Berna (101.5/65.1/64 kg) — ( )_( ) Berna M. Bleeker-Slikker / http://www.volksliedjes.nl

Body for Life has a lot of good info in it. However, it really depends on your background. If you have been a couch potato all of your adult life and out of shape then it would be really hard to suddenly (as opposed to transitioning to) start doing all the exercises and eat the way the book says, IMHO. Many of the people in the book and Muscle Media magazine got really good results. After the very first BFL, the consensus on misc.fitness.weights was that all of those people were in really good shape at one time but let their physique deteriorate. That means it was easy to get their physique back as opposed to someone who had never been in good shape. One thing that does not make sense to me is when people are profiled and their beginning and ending results given, they will claim that they gained like 8 lbs. of muscle. However, when you compute their before and after lean mass, they either gained no lean mass or lost some. So, I do not know how they could have gained the muscle. I called MM about it one time but they said they did not know. For example, in the April 2001 issue of Muscle Media, they had an article called ‘True Stories of Transformation’. In it, Scott Baus said the following: ‘Measuring My Success: My bodyfat percentage went from 30 to 9.8; scale weight went from 217 lbs to 170 lbs; pant size went from 38" to 30"; resting heart rate went from 85 to 56. I lost a total of 55 lbs of fat while gaining 8 lbs of muscle.’ So . . . Starting Stats weight: 217 bf: 30% Ending Stats weight: 170 bf: 9.8 He says he gained 8 lbs. of muscle and lost 55 lbs. of fat. If you do the math, it comes out to something like: Starting Stats fat mass: 65 lbs. lean mass: 152 lbs. Ending Stats fat mass: 17 lbs. lean mass: 153 lbs. That is a 1 lb. gain in lean mass and a 48 lb. loss of fat. Not the 8 lbs. of muscle the article stated. There are numerous examples of this throughout the magazine. Recently tho, they have stopped giving out beginning and ending stats, instead they would say something like, ‘he lost 40 lbs. of fat’ with no other information about it. Rather than jump on the emotional bandwagon, read the book, take what you can get but do not expect to look like many of those people in the pictures. The only exception to it is if you used to look like ‘he-man’ before, than expecting that look again maybe realistic. -g

Go look up my stats at wwww.BFLtracker.com. My profile name is ‘Dally. I’ve lost over 30 pounds doing this since September. It’s the real deal – you just have to commit to doing the program. There is a lot of support for the challenge at www.bodyforlife.com in the guestbook section. Wendy
Response:
. . . but the only thing to go by is your beginning and ending stats. All of the common methods of measuring bodyfat do just that, measure bodyfat. It does not make a distinction between lean mass muscle and non-muscle lean mass.
Okay, I’ll agree with this one. Also, when I gained LBM I can assume that some of it is the increased glycogen stores and some of it is denser bones. It’s not all muscle increase, just as all decreases aren’t innocuous ones associated with supporting the fat. Point still is, BFL works to lose fat without losing muscle. Word. Wendy
Response:
Just for grins and chuckles, I was always one to exercise, but hadn’t done free weights since high school over twenty years ago. I don’t think this program is out of reach for overweight middle-aged Mommies. It’s tough, but we already knew we had to make some big changes to lose the weight, right? The main thing I’d say about the Body for Life program is to do your best at the challenge for twelve solid weeks. After twelve weeks you’ll know if it works for you. You will learn a bunch of stuff along the way just y trying. That information is invaluable in your lifelong quest to learn how to fuel your body, even if what you learn is that BFL isn’t the plan for you. But give it an honest effort and really DO IT for twelve weeks.
One thing people miss in their criticisms of BFL is that it has gotten people like Wendy, a former WeightsHeathen(tm)
, to get out and enjoy weight training. Sure, it’s not the greatest for an experienced athlete, but who cares? Experienced gym goers have their own path anyway. Even if you don’t make the so called ideal body you still do very well anyway, and hopefully you’ve created a habit of lifelong fitness. There are worse things than BFL, for sure. Response:
I gained a bunch of muscle in my first six months of the Body for Life program and have started to lose some lean body mass now. Does that mean I didn’t gain the muscle? No. I do not believe I am losing muscle as my skin shrinks… I think I am losing NON-muscle lean body mass.
. . . but the only thing to go by is your beginning and ending stats. All of the common methods of measuring bodyfat do just that, measure bodyfat. It does not make a distinction between lean mass muscle and non-muscle lean mass. If during the course of 12 weeks you gained 4 lbs. of lean mass then loss 5 lbs. of lean mass, there is no way the final result can be muscle gain (unless, of course, you had one arm chopped off or something). -g

I have just finished my 3rd week of BFL. I must say, I am amazed. I need to lose about 40 pounds and get back in shape. This program has made me go back to the gym and it seems to work very well for me. And NO, I do not expect to look like the people in the before and after pictures, but I am sure I will be able to present *my own* success story after a couple or three of 12-week rounds. Go for it, Dan! -Pekar
Response:
Even if you don’t make the so called ideal body . . .
That is a common criticism though. People go into it expecting to look like a ripped he-man, like many of the pictures. I remember the very first BFL, Bill Phillips said most people dropped out. There were like 50,000 entries but only several thousand finishers. I think the statistic still holds today. For me, it has been a transition, not a light switch. In other words, on Monday, I am laying around the house, eating junk food, etc. and on Tuesday (day 1 of BFL), I am eating clean and doing squats in the gym. It didn’t happen like that for me. -g

What exactly is NON-muscle lean body mass? Are you losing bones or organs? This is a serious question. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Wendy
Response:
As a nurse who just loved anatomy and chemistry in college, boy hidey, there are lots of things in there
. As you lose weight you lose a bit of your total blood volume, – smaller bodies have less blood volume that larger ones, probably some connective tissue, surely the interstitial fluid that supported the fat that is gone… Who knows what else. Over time some of your bone density probably goes too, since you no longer need it to hold up your extra weight. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – What exactly is NON-muscle lean body mass? Response:

Skin is the main one. I have lost a bunch of skin. Impressive amounts of skin. Not to get too graphic here, but I tried on a pair of my fat-lady elastic underwear today and they were hanging from me in folds. They used to be tight. I’ve lost several pounds of skin by my estimation. Another way that dieters lose LBM is by losing bone density. Hopefully that isn’t happening in my case, since I’m doing such weight-bearing exercises! The next kind is cellular support for the fat: the water in the fat cells, the membranes of the fat cells, the vascular stuff supporting the fat cells: I have less miles of veins, having less miles of me. My hips have gone from 52" to 46" in two challenges. My waist went from 41 to 36.5 inches. I’m obviously and definitely a smaller person. I am not done yet, though, and expect it to take another two challenges (i.e., I’m maybe half-way there.) Wendy

Interesting, does anyone know just how much connective tissue is lost during weight loss? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – —

Equity transactions of consolidated subsidiaries (US)
Question:
All, Hoping for input on a question. How does a parent company account for new stock issuances to outsiders (principally as a result of stock option exercises) by its consolidated subsidiary that occur at a price that exceeds the parent company’s cost basis. (Parent is private, subsidiary is public). My belief is that the entry on the parent books would be to debit Investment in Subsidiary and credit Gain. The alternative would be to debit Investment in Subsidiary and credit Additional Paid in Capital. However, this second option would be more appropriate in a situation such as where the increases in APIC at the subsidiary level arise from treasury stock transactions (i.e. reissuing share held in treasury at a cost that exceeds the treasury stock cost basis). Thanks. Regards, Matt P., CPA

I think accounting for it as revenue would be even less appropriate in the stock option situation because the gain is completely a "paper gain" in providing equity to outsiders, while in the treasury stock situation, you are actually receiving cash for the increased market value of the stock. The increased equity ownership in the stock option situation isn’t really a revenue event. I would debit investment and credit APIC for the "paper gain" in ownership of the sub from the issuance of stock options.

I spent a week or two thinking about this during the period 1965 – 1970 when I was in the accounting theory consulting department of a "big eight" firm. The transaction I was looking at was caused by a Canadian tax law which made it better for a US company to own 80% of a Canadian company than 100%, so they had a public offering of shares in the subsidiary which diluted the parent’s interest to the 80% mark and had the subsidiary remit the entire net proceeds to the US parent. I thought income treatment was the answer since the net effect was the same as if the parent had sold 20% of the stock in the Canadian subsidiary to the public, but the SEC did not agree on the basis that if it is a capital transaction to the subsidiary it must be a capital transaction in the consolidated financial statements. The SEC now may allow income treatment per SAB 103, topic 5H: http://www.sec.gov/interps/account/sab103codet5.htm#5h You probably don’t care because the entity you are working on is private, but who knows what the future will bring if the subsidiary is already subject to SEC rules.

Hi! I am an MYOB user in Canada and would like to gain access to these forums. Would you please post their URLs for us, please. BTW, I bought QuickBooks Pro 2001 when they offered free credit card merchant accounts. After evaluating the product for a month or so, I tossed it on the shelf and went back to MYOB. Even though my background is in accounting, I find it to be much more intuitive than QuickBooks. At least I got to write of the wasted $300~ that I spent on QB. Roberta

But 88% of small business computer accounting program users prefer QuickBooks. I do not recall a blue screen with QB since W95. Today it almost never crashes and may not have frozen a computer in years.

No, but there may be a big issue with having clients pay on the web, with automatic entry into your accouting program. There may be 50 add-on programs for this, with many more being added rapidly. There also are integral and add-ons that track time and turn it into invoices and others that link scanned documents to QB transactions. There are about 300 such programs, with a very wide range of functions, at http://www.marketplace.intuit.com/ and 600+ at http://www.quickbooks-add-ons.com/ Programs like this increasingly let us quickly and easily never enter data twice, reduce errors, speed results and better manage our small businesses. Very few QB competitors are at all likely to ever provide this very increasingly broad range of integrated add-on capability. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -REgards Brendon Can people please provide an opinion if they have used or are currently using MYOB Business Basics software. I know exactly what you mean. We’ve been on that roller coaster for years. We’ll have seemingly rational and cordial interactions with BM, and then she’ll do something crazy again. Every time we think we’re prepared, but we’re not. The only thing we can know is that we can’t know. ;-O I feel for you, Brian and SD. At least you have time now until the next court date, right? Geri – Did you guys blind-side her with the request for CS? If the court date was just to take care of what you guys had already agreed upon and no request for CS was involved do you think maybe she would not have hired a lawyer then? ~August

There was a different court date for the CS. The request for CS could not have been a real big surprise, because we told her back when Brian lost his job that we might have to ask for it. I suspect that getting the attorney might be about the child support request, but she is going to end up paying him more (in fact, probably already has) than she would have had to pay us for a few months of child support. That makes no sense to me. Also, unless the (illegal) gender card is played, there is no way she should not have to pay it, since Brian is not purposefully remaining unemployed, so hiring an attorney is not going to prevent this. I guess that is part of my frustration – I can’t imagine what she is thinking. ~~Geri~~

Geri I SO hear you ;( There are days I think about all the things we could have done had we not had BM to deal with on a constant basis. I absolutly cannot STAND living in the midwest and have been dying to move south (away from cold winters) for what seems like forever. OTOH though I am also very aware of how much of a vindictive *really bad "C" word* BM is and know that she would take us to the cleaners in CS payments if she had custody. I love my daughter and would never give her up for the world but it would be so nice to be free of all the crap we deal with because of BM. It has been since December for us, though technically, Brian was paid through the end of the month so real unemployment didn’t start until January. Brian is in a funny industry. He is an accountant, but his "specialty" is real estate management so he isn’t going to get even considered for something like tax or cost accounting. His industry is pretty volatile, too, based not only on real estate, but retail. We (he and I) kind of have the same deal. People always say to me, "Oh, you are a nurse, you can work anywhere." Not really, because I have ever only worked with kids, moms and babies. I have never done adult nursing since nursing school (nor do I want to), so I am not really marketable as, for example, an ER nurse or critical care nurse (where the big bucks, high stress jobs are). >It’s a tough job market right now, and we are >fortunate in that the unemployment in this state is not as high as many >others. I think we are about a percent higher than the national rate, IIRC. Brian is, besides doing his own searching, also going through a bunch of headhunters. ~~Geri~~

That is exactly it. I worked for lawyers that did family law for a few years and I have seen firsthand the tricky stuff they can do. Geri, I totally understand how you feel and you have my sympathy. It’s a tough spot to be in where you are now. Being at the point of wanting to stay and fight to the end for SD but also wanting to cut your losses and walk away and be done with the fighting and hassles and get on with life. The court evaluation should be completed, the school/custody issues decided and the child support thing will be heard and decided on. This happens in July. Geri, Didn’t your husband and mine get laid off on the same day or something? DH had a lot of "overqualified" feedback too. He finally made revisions to his resume that removed references to length of experience. Also, we learned that most larger companies have the submitted resumes "read" by computers to check number of keywords. If the right keywards are not in there it doesn’t even get to an HR rep. It’s a tough job market right now, and we are fortunate in that the unemployment in this state is not as high as many others. How’s California? Karen
Response:
>Weren’t you kind of expecting this though?
Not at all. BM is the poorest person in the world. >Can you get an attorney as well?
Not really. To be honest, I am kind of tired of all of this battling and there is a limit to what I will finance with my working alone (as in I am not going to kill myself working overtime for it) – this court evaluation and an attorney are Brian’s responsibility, really. >Seems like a standard thing to ask in regards to custody and support. I >wouldn’t take it personally. My guess is that it won’t come up again once >Brian has turned over the information.
It probably is. Brian isn’t offended by it. This is totally a me thing, and like I said probably unreasonable. I feel like I have done a lot to smooth things between the households just by handling them myself in a cordial way with BM. She even thanked me for covering her butt last week when her sister’s child spilled the beans to SD about the Easter Bunny – I think I bought us at least a year or so. We came to an agreement about this continuance, it was all cordial. Like I said, there have been no major blowups between the households for a while now, so I feel kind of stabbed in the back in a way. Like why bother. Maybe it is PMS – I don’t know – it is a hard thing to explain. >There’s >no use letting it get to you. That’s what she wants.
I know. I just hate that nyah-nyah she was exuding at us. I can just imagine what she would be like if she actually would get majority custody. I would have to move into Scott Peterson’s cell, I fear. ~~Geri~~
Response:
(snip) >In CA, is your income figured into the whole equation?
Not at all. There is a formula (supposedly non-gender biased) that plugs in the percent of custody of both parents and the income of both parents and spits out a number and that is the amount of child support. BM has refused to even provide her financial information to us for two years (technically she is in contempt, but we have not pursued it). If she makes substantially more money than Brian, according to this formula, she should be paying. We are not hurting financially (at this point) as far as living expenses because of my income – SD is not even aware of any real differences in lifestyle, and that was why we originally waited to request CS for so long, to help kee the animosity level down. OTOH, BM is still nickel and diming us on things like medication co-pays and things like that, even though she knew we could request CS, and that we never bothered to even ask her for when both of us were working. ~~Geri~~

Actually I think you’re right in that BM having an attorney might really help eliminate some her more stupid motions and outbursts. Our BM’s attorney used to kick BM hard under the table when she’d start ranting at meetings and the hearing. >I know. I just hate that nyah-nyah she was exuding at us. We have talked about it. My focus would be to see positives on both sides of the coin. We think SD has the greatest chance of "stabilizing" for want of a better word, if we have majority custody. She is still demonstrating better school behavior on our custody time, even at Stalag 13. I think her mom’s lifestyle is a life of chaos and drama and I don’t think it would be good for SD to live their for the majority of her life. That being said, if BM would get custody, we would be freed up in a lot of ways. We could move where we please (if we were paying substantial CS, we would have to leave here in order to make ends meet) and move on with our lives. SD could come and stay with us for the summer. We could be fairly free of BM most of the time. I think this would wreak havoc on SD’s life, but at least everyone could move on and get used to it instead of this waiting to see how it is all going to turn out for years. ~~Geri~~

You know Geri, with our BM, whenever something unexpected happens, even if it’s something that people can put a normal or happy spin on, I’m always dreading the other shoe. You’re right. None of this is good for SD, or the adults involved. It’s all about choosing your battles. Is this one worth it? If it is then I think you need to get used to BM having an attorney, and used to the idea that the attorney is going to do his best to bog you guys down in paper work and motions. It’s what she’s paying him to do. I feel for everyone though. Going to court is a horrible process, and it always seems like no one seems happy with the outcome. Love, Melissa A good friend will come bail you out of jail… but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying "Damn we F#*%d up!"
Response:
We went in to court today, which was supposed to be the custody hearing date, to request a continuance until summer. We had already *agreed* with BM on this continuance, based on the need for the court evaluator to have more time, and also based on that we still have part of our fee to pay (since we are currently a one income (mine) family – unlike Kitten, since the first of the year, our income has decreased 25%). Also, after five months of not requesting it (unlike Bozo, who would undoubtedly have left skid marks to the courthouse the first day of her unemployment), Brian filed for child support, the hearing date set for June. We kind of anticipated having both hearings changed to the same date, probably in July. So, we went into court today and there is Bozo (in the SAME dress she always wears – this must be her lucky dress that she never washes) and we are given the notice that she now has an attorney. (Both Brian and BM have not used attorneys for a couple of years now.) This is the same (vile) creature who has said in her zillions of court documents 98,789,954 times that she doesn’t have enough money to pay for this or that for SD (including her half of the court evaluation – which she seems to have dug up somewhere). So, when it is our turn, he proceeds to go up and speak to the judge first, ask for the continuance, move that the dates be joined – all which we expected and planned on (now costing BM probably fifteen hundred bucks to do so). Then he proceeds to move that Brian has to provide documentation of the number of contacts and interviews (he wanted to have a set number, but the judge didn’t allow that) and with whom that Brian has done. He made it sound like Brian is some deadbeat who isn’t looking for a job and delaying the custody evaluation on purpose. Fortunately we can prove otherwise, but the implication was just insulting. Anyway, so now Brian has to do that. We are presuming that he will be working by then (he has been First Runner Up on several jobs he has applied for, but never makes it to Miss America), although today a potential employer called and cancelled an interview because he is overqualified. This is kind of funny, because Brian is not nearly as chapped about this attorney thing as I am. I guess I am pissed because this is the first time BM has ever completely blind-sided us with anything – we have usually be able to predict pretty accurately what evil she will do next. Also, it seems a little stinky to me that for someone who is too poor to pay for anything, all of a sudden she can come up with the money for an attorney – probably to try to fight her paying child support, but especially to represent her on an issue we had already talked with her about and agreed on. The other thing that really irritated me was that we were sitting behind her and she kept turning around to smirk at us. Really, I wanted to just snatch her bald, slap her into next week and be done with it. I see there possibly can be some good sides to this – such as if the court can also make the connection about her having the money to pay an attorney, but being too broke for anything else. Also, presumably she will no longer be filing all of this dopey, frivolous crap based on no evidence, dragging us into court. We have seen this judge be fairly lenient with people who represent themselves, so we may be able to get away with more than a person whose job it is to professionally appear in a courtroom. He is going to have to file documents on time, etc., and actually serve us with the things sooner than five minutes before court starts. (Actually, we have not been properly served with any of the court orders since 2000.) I am not sure, since Brian represents himself, if he is obligated (or allowed) to communicate with the attorney or with BM through the attorney now. The last time we used attorneys, both sides had them (not an option for us), so we are not sure what the protocol is. The level of adversarial-ness and hostility of this whole thing has elevated about 3000%, as far as we are concerned. We have been tossing around the idea, every time BM calls here about some stupid thing, to let her talk to the machine, answer her in writing, and copy it to her attorney (and thus costing her some legal fees). I know this is unreasonable, but that past few months, dealing with BM, have been relatively painless – I just handle it all, which keeps things short and sweet and Brian’s blood pressure down – so in a way this feels like a back-stabbing (well, what a surprise, I guess) from her. The very bottom line is that I don’t see how any of this is good for SD. The acrimony is at a new high, money that could be supporting her is going to an attorney, and all of this because BM wants to fight so hard to keep SD in a crummy school where her behavior scores have decreased 20% in the four months she has been in school there, she is learning to talk like a sailor from the older criminals-in-waiting at that place, her only friend is an autistic five-year old (who we had to stop her from aping), her academics have decreased (the one day she brought home some work from school, it was of the level she had been doing easily in first grade), she has to ride two hours in a van to get to and from the place, her doctors all disagree with her being there, and the school refused to communicate with us about any of these concerns! As I was watching all of this today, the temptation to convince Brian to bug out of this whole deal and just write checks was running high. But then the thought of abandoning SD (who cried and cried last week one night when I left for work (and didn’t know she was still awake) because I forgot to kiss her and say good-bye before I left – he had to get me out of report to talk to her) to an incompetant mother just rips my heart out. Sorry things aren’t working out the way you guys had hoped — that truly sucks. Really, though, I don’t understand why you’re upset about her hiring the lawyer. I realize that you guys aren’t in the position to hire one right now (though if you needed to, you probably could find one that would work with you), but if she can afford one, what is the big deal? Why is it that Brian feels the need to go for CS now? Given that you guys have that whole 50/50 arrangement, it doesn’t seem fair that BM should have to pay CS b/c her situation is presumably improved over yours right now — though I suppose that the argument would be that Brian is the unemployed parent and you are the spouse of the parent. That doesn’t quite gel, however, with the whole "equal" partner thing when it comes to SD’s needs and decision making power…… In CA, is your income figured into the whole equation? I’m just curious — NOT that I believe that it should be figured into it — b/c I thought that CA was one of the states that figured "household income" rather than parental income. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dear Tech Support: Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed that the new program began making unexpected changes to the accounting modules, limiting access to flower and jewelry applications that had operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.9 but installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0 and NBA 3.0. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. Desperate Dear Desperate: Keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an entertainment package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Try to enter the command: C:/ I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME and install Tears 6.2. Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications: Guilty 3.0 and Flowers 7.0, but remember, overuse can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program. DO NOT install Mother-In-Law 1.0 or reinstall another Boyfriend program. These are not supported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. Consider buying additional software to improve performance. I personally recommend HotFood 3.0 and Lingerie 5.3. Also, running Nagging 5.3 too often can sometimes cause Husband 1.0 to secretly install Mistress 1.0, which would then require your to run Private Investigator 7.5 utility and possible even Attorney 9.0, which could lead to a system wide failure and the need to reboot Husband 1.0! Everybody clear on this now?

Question:
I’m interested in comparing the following career-path options: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Internal Auditing (is there a Certification Exam for this?) Can anyone out there reply to this post with factual information on these three options? Perhaps even compared to the option of not pursuing certification and simply staying in corporate accounting/management in general. Where are the most job prospects? I’m trying to decide where I want to take my career goals now that I’m in an educated position to consider sitting for one of these exams… Thanks!

go for all! get the cpa while you work for a cpa and then get your cma. or get the cma now and then go for the cpa. at some point you will need to work under a cpa in public accounting. good luck…. its all worth it!

"CIA" = Certified Internal Auditor Where are the most job prospects?
The 64,000 dollar question. The CPA will more than likely open more options for you in the long run, the CMA, more than likely limits you to internal accounting functions, which isn’t a bad thing, and the CIA would even limit that further to internal audit positions. As always, the more the merrier, so multiple certificates wouldn’t hurt. You really need to get out there and decide which path you want to take through experience. Things aren’t always what they seem from the start, and you will most likely change paths a few times (even if just slightly). — Paul A. Thomas, CPA Athens, Georgia http://www.pat-cpa.com

Through my own questioning and research, I have found the CMA and CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) to be more widely accepted by Multinational or "Global" companies. I think this is due to the fact that these credentials are based upon concepts that apply in any industry, in any country. A CPA (or its equivalent) is rather more specific to the country in which it was earned. This is not to say that CPAs have no knowledge outside of their home country; just that global business seems to like the other designations. Of course, getting all 3 can never hurt! If public accounting is your heart’s desire, then the CPA is obviously where you should go. Probably not, it really takes a lot of work to dig anything up that is objective and verifiable. I think your going to have to rely on people’s opinions. Perhaps even compared to the option of not pursuing certification and simply staying in corporate accounting/management in general.
Generally, if you have a job, pursuing the relevant certification MAY be career enhancing. It depends on the herd you are in, the group dynamics. Where are the most job prospects?
I think engineering. As for business, probably marketing. The most relevant question is, who is offering you a job? Do you have an offer? Do you have a relative who will bring you on board? Do you belong to an organization where many of the members value you and would be conduits to jobs. You might want to read Bowles, "What color is my parachute." He is very thorough at covering the area. I’m trying to decide where I want to take my career goals now that I’m in an educated position to consider sitting for one of these exams.
As you age, you frequently have to switch careers. Roman, I think you’re right. The only problem I have seen with QB is people trying to get it to do things that are beyond its design. I’m sure someone (Mike Block) may know of a way that really makes sense but I wouldn’t ride that horse too far. Move up to the next generation of programs like Red Wing (which I resell), Business Works, Peachtree 2000 or others. They have more bells and whistles. Michael, It is not a feature that is supported by QuickBooks. QuickBooks costs around $100, you need to spend some money to get what you want. I suggest that you contact some firms that are doing what you want to do and then find out what programs they are using. You could use Access, or any of the other programs that folks recommend on this news group. QuickBooks has a pretty good import function, but it does have it’s limitations. roman – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve really had it with trying to figure out how to import with Quickbooks. Peachtree Report Writer
Question:
I’m having trouble getting a report to spit out of PAW Report Writer. I even paid the $10 to Peachtree support only to have them send me back drivel which was not even close to correct. Since the report writer manual is not written in a terrestrial language, I thought I’d give a shot here. I’m trying to run a report of Sales by Item by Customer — Detail. This would be the inverse of the default report, Sales by Customer by Item — Detail. Basically, I want a list of all my inventory items, with a subheading of the customers that purchased each item and how much they purchased (cumulatively). I can’t get this. I can get a list which sets forth the same inventory item as a header with every different customer order as a subheading. The list is correct, but I have to manually add up each quantity to get the total quantity of the item sold. I was also able to get a list which lists each inventory item only once, with a subheading of each customer who purchased it only once. The problem is that it shows only the last quantity purchased by that customer next to the customer name, which is an incorrect statement of that customer’s purchases during the chosen period. Strangely enough, the subtotal quantity for the item for all customers is correct, but the subtotal for the net sales amount lists only the last reported invoice. That is, if Customer A buys 3 pieces of an item on three invoices, and Customer B buys 2 pieces at once, the report shows: Item X Customer A 1 $5.00 etc… Customer B 2 $10.00 Subtotal: 5 $15.00 I can’t get the report correct, and I can’t get Peachtree to make it correct — even if I pay them.

Quick quesiton–how did the corporation pay the tax? Answer that and you’ll have the answer to the question. It seems the most likely response is that somebody contributed the cash to the corporation to pay the tax or paid the tax for the corporation. The most likely entry would be to debit the tax liability and credit a liability to whoever paid the corporate tax. The other answer is that you sold off a piece of the land, but somehow I just don’t think that is what happened… Ed Zollars, CPA (AZ) http://www.getnet.com/~hmtzcpas
